Bette Midler destined to become a superstar 5 Star Review
2009-05-12 - This is an old recording...Bette Midler and Barry Manilow. Bette makes these old songs sizzle! I had the privilege of seeing her live a couple of times in the early stages of her career and won't ever forget the experience. She is as multi-talented as Streisand and made the natural transition into acting in "The Rose". It was no surprise to me that she nailed it. Bette, I admire you tremendously.

Bette in true form! 4 Star Review
2009-02-23 - This will always be my favorite Bette album. Music changes your mood and this one truly does. LOVE IT!

Not so fast Ms. "M" fans... 3 Star Review
2009-02-17 - I'll admit that this Barry Manilow produced album gives us at least a meager example of the multi talented Bette Midler. Less is more in my opinion! The best tracks I feel are Midler solo with Manilow accompanying on the piano, such as "Skylark". Her voice projects best in these. Released as her second album back in 1973, remastered in 1995, most of the other selections seem over produced or overblown. I always think of Bettes voice bigger than life, like Barbra Streisand. She's all but over powered by the arrangements. An updated remastering with the focal point on Midler would be a benefit. Her trademark gimmick of multiple voice overs are represented on this album by Glenn Miller's hit "In The Mood" and "Lullaby of Broadway". These are fun but are way too short, cutting off as you just get into them. Track #8 is a medley of three songs that fly right by. "Twisted" without lyrics, after repeated listening I'm still trying to figure what the hell it's all about. The concluding track "Higher and Higher" finishes in an uncharacteristically wild frenzy. Clocking in at just over 32min. this disc is not the best way to explore Bette Midlers talents. It only leaves one wanting for more.

More Quality Bette 5 Star Review
2008-12-24 - Bette Midler's first album THE DIVINE MISS M was such a masterpiece that honestly nothing could ever compare. That certainly does not mean that this, her self titled second release, is not of the highest quality and a 5 star release in itself. It is just a little subpar compared to the amazing debut. This album follows in the same vein with dramatic, emotional readings of ballads such as DRINKING AGAIN, SKYLARK and HIGHERT AND HIGHER. We also have a venture into jazz wtith IN THE MOOD and she lets it all loose on the anthemic I SHALL BE RELEASED. Some think this song is overdone and out of place but I think it works perfectly. Bette also returns to the fun, campy remakes with LULLABY OF BROADWAY and the awesome medley with the highlight of DA DOO RUN RUN.

Most important, what is here is a continuation of the rare talent that is Bette Midler. She is campy, raw, seductive, sultry and always impressive. A very high quality follow-up to an amazing debut.
