Editorial Review:
If she is very, very lucky, the first album by Papa John Phillips's other singing daughter will be remembered as a camp classic, the ultimate document of the 1990s' veneration of supermodel/hellions. Backed by bland, anonymous alternawhatever, with the occasional piano ballad thrown in, she spends the entire disc attempting to emote like Alanis--exactly like Alanis. It doesn't work: Bijou's vocal tone is even thinner than she is, and though every song but the one she wrote at 13 has been buffed up by tune doctors, the lyrics stumble from one howler to another ("You joker, you soaker / She's sleeping with your chauffeur"). A collaboration with Luscious Jackson's Jill Cunniff has a sweet, sunny vibe, but there's not much else but novelty value to recommend this. --Douglas Wolk

I'd Rather Eat Glass Reviews:
Great CD From A Troubled Bijou 5 Star Review
2009-11-08 - Bijou Phillips released this CD during some of the toughest parts of her life, hence the title when she was asked about it that she'd rather eat glass then repeat those times of her life. This CD has just become unpressed, meaning, grab this gem before it goes up in value.

The Real Deal for an ameature 5 Star Review
2007-12-11 - Ive listened to this one for almost 10 years and half to say ,she`s not a byproduct of Walmart.... I`mean I would just fall over laughing if this cd was sitting on a rack in Walmart....I`d probably be dreaming no surprise.
BijouPhillips is spontaneous, eclectic, and the real deal with no strings attached.

catchy and underrated 5 Star Review
2006-07-14 - I first heard of Bijou when I saw her video for "When I Hated Him" and then I noticed her song "Polite" on my copy of the "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer" soundtrack. I loved both and so I went and got the CD. Not a perfect album, but a strong debut, that got SLAMMED by critics. I however have been listening to this CD since I got it in '99.

This album is FULL of incredibly catchy songs...the trip-hoppy "Polite", the rocking "I Am A Mountain", the soaring "When I Hated Him" over gospel singers and the bouncy "Hawaii" just to name a few. I even really like her lyrics, although at times, they can be a bit cryptic. It took me awhile of listening to realize what some of the songs were about. There's only one song on the album that I don't care for, and that's "I Never Shot The President". She just seems to be trying too hard to sound more alt-rock than she is and it falls short.

Her light, wispy voice is really the only thing to get past. On a few occasions it can get kind of annoying, but really it's just a question of whether or not you like her voice. Listen to the samples, if you like it, you'll like the album...if you hate it, you'll HATE the album. I think she's a rather talented vocalist with great range and control, particularly on "When I Hated Him", "Polite" and her beautiful airy falsetto in "So Tired". She gets compared to Alanis a lot, I think Bijou sounds more like Poe than Alanis personally, but she's in that same vein of singer/songwriters. If you like Poe, Alanis, Lisa Loeb, etc, I'd highly recommend "I'd Rather Eat Glass".

awesome 5 Star Review
2006-06-20 - i've had this album for a week and can't listing to it so go and buy it you won't be hurt by it

Not half bad... 4 Star Review
2005-08-28 - Bijou's debut album isn't really all that bad..nor is it superb. I think her lyrics are really what is the problem. 50% of them don't really make sense. Most of the time when you are happy, sad, ticked, any kind of emotion..you want to be able to listen to a song and relate to it. And with that being said, it is pretty much impossible to be able to relate to many of Bijou's songs on the album. I rated the songs by stars. 5 being the best obviously.

HAWAII - **** (The chorus on the song is fun, and lovely...the verses on this song are almost ruined by the little Hawaiian beat in the background that doesn't fit in with any other beat in the entire song.)

POLITE - **** (This song has 1999 written all over it, I know that might sound confusing but it just has the beat and tone to most songs you heard in the late 90s..a definite like.)

I OWN YOU - ***** (I love this song, Bijou's voice is great in every aspect on this song, one of my faves.)

I AM A MOUNTAIN - *** (The beat during when she sings the verses is almost annoying, but when the chorus kicks in, the song really pumps up and gets you motivated.)

LITTLE DIPPER - *** (A lovely, emotional song.)

STRANDED - *** (It has potential, and in many parts of the song you believe it is really fixing to kick in, but it never does.)

I NEVER SHOT THE PRESIDENT - ***** (2nd best on the album - the
lyrics are quite humorous but this is just a song to dance to
and half fun with, you'd definitely play this at a party.)

SO TIRED - * (I skip over this song pretty much always.)

MERMAID AND THE EARTHMAN - * (I definitely always skip over this song too.)

JUST LOOK AROUND - **** (A good song, Its pretty average, not the best on the album, but you'll never skip over it.)

WHEN I HATED HIM (Don't Tell Me) - ***** (Best on the album - the lyrics on this song are beautiful and could apply to many
girls with relationships in their life)

BREAKFAST - **** (gets better with the chorus)
