Editorial Review:
Spey Casting with a single-handed rod? YOU BET! Learn the basic and advanced Spey Casting techniques for both Single and Two-Handed Rods. Watch and learn as 17 of the world's best casters share their styles and skills through multi-camera coverage of easy-to-follow demonstrations on rivers in actual fishing situations. Chapters include: 13 detailed demonstratons of spey casting techiques; and 6 Bonus Chapters that include an interview with Mel Krieger; a fun look behind-the-scenes; a casting competition; and interviews with manufacturers/sponsors involved in the production.
One very important point to remember is that spey casting is a style of casting utilized by both single- and double-handed rod casters. There are a growing number of people today who fish in rivers throughout the east & west (Montana, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Maine, Oregon, Florida, Colorado, California, etc.) who no longer use the standard roll cast. Instead they use spey techniques that allow for powerful casts when there is no room for a normal backcast. In fact, many people today are not using a normal backcast ever (even if they have room) because spey techniques have proven so effective. There's lots here for the beginner and those who already love either or both of these casting elements and want to learn advanced techniques and styles. What sets this DVD apart from all other Spey videos out there, is the truly professional composition, editing, and camerawork--and the fact that it was done out of a love for the sport, with several demonstrators dontating their time. Sequences shot at the beautiful Golden Gate Angling and Casting Club in San Francisco and on rivers around the world.
Art of Spey Casting Reviews:
Important and Valuable
2009-09-04 -
Important and valuable ...
This DVD is terrific. It has 13 of the world's best spey casters -using both single-handed and two-handed rods - who demonstrate the basics and subtle tips on how to perfect this very effective casting style. Simon Gawesworth starts everything off with an easy-to-understand explanation of exactly what spey casting is. Mutiple cameras - for wide, medium and important close-up shots - help show details of each caster's knowledge and suggestions. This alone sets the DVD apart.
I strongly disagree with the previous reviewer from Wyoming. A lot of the DVD was shot at the Golden Gate Angling and Casting Club, not into "a swimming pool." This show is about learning and understanding the facets and benefits of spey casting from the best casters anywhere; it is NOT about finding fish. Also, the show has six bonus chapters that are informational as well as just fun to watch.
just average
2009-09-01 - I found this DVD to be not as good as I expected. It's just the filming of a California Spey Casting exibition. Their only casting into a swimming pool, which is perfect conditions. The disk shows one how to cast, but it's much harder when your out on the stream. A much better, and cheaper spey casting tourtial is the John and Amy Hazel's Intro to Spey Casting. This disk does a better job of showing you the spey cast and it also shows one where fish will be, and how to get the fly to the fish.
A remarkable display by expert spey casters
2008-11-22 - This little DVD goes a long way toward removing the cloak of mystery and the mumbo jumbo that has surrounded the spey cast. However, Lani Waller's purile and intrusive questions of every spey caster are pointless and become an irritant by the third interrogatory. Its a pity more time was not devoted to reviewing and explaining the multitude of line choices-that might have cleared up some confusion generated by the many line makers. Overall, an excellent product and worth the money.
very good but not the best, on a valuable addition to your casting techniques
2008-06-22 - This is very informative and covers a great deal of material - certainly worth buying. However, the 3 disc Gawesworth DVD is, I think, probably a better buy for the first time through. Most people who really want to get into this will probably want both, and also his book.
The 3 dvd set is Rio's Modern Spey Casting and does not usually show up first if you search for it with google.
A second point is that the general notions involved in spey casting are extremely helpful for the general flyfisher and can easily be incorporated into nearly any fishing venue or context.
Unfortunately, it can be a little difficult to get consistent and clear advice regarding the kind of line to purchase as the traditional 4, 5, 6, 7, etc weight system that is used to label rods and weight forward or double taper lines is not completely applicable. One is dealing with casting about 60 feet or more of line outside the tip top guide, whereas AFTMA weighs the first 30 feet. You can get guidance from your rod manufacturer, at least Sage gives it, or Rio and possible scientific anglers, but it tends sometimes to be a little contradictory or not "on point." FYI, there are 15 grains per gram and .035 avoirdupois ounces per gram. You do not want to overload your rod and break it, but if you do not have enough weight, you will not load the rod enough.
An enjoyable exploration into spey casting.
2008-03-11 - This is a great video, professionally done, entertaining and informative. The world's finest spey casters explain their favorite techniques clearly and enjoyably. I can't imagine another show that does as fine a job of illustrating all aspects of the spey state of the art. Whether you are a single or double handed caster, The Art of Spey Casting is a must see.
