Editorial Review:
Universal Apollo 13 (HD-DVD)
Nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture, "Apollo 13" is now available in incredible High-Definition DVD. Produced by Academy Award winner Brian Grazer and directed by Oscar winner Ron Howard, "Apollo 13" stars Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton, Gary Sinise and Ed Harris in the inspiring and riveting story of the real-life space flight that gripped a nationand changed the world.
Description of Apollo 13 [HD DVD]:
NASA's worst nightmare turned into one of the space agency's most heroic moments in 1970, when the Apollo 13 crew was forced to hobble home in a disabled capsule after an explosion seriously damaged the moon-bound spacecraft. Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, and Bill Paxton play (respectively) astronauts Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise in director Ron Howard's intense, painstakingly authentic docudrama. The Apollo 13 crew and Houston-based mission controllers race against time and heavy odds to return the damaged spacecraft safely to Earth from a distance of 205,500 miles. Using state-of-the-art special effects and ingenious filmmaking techniques, Howard and his stellar cast and crew build nail-biting tension while maintaining close fidelity to the facts. The result is a fitting tribute to the Apollo 13 mission and one of the biggest box-office hits of 1995. --Jeff Shannon
Apollo 13 [HD DVD] Reviews:
unrealistic storyline
2008-07-14 - Apollo 13 is a spaceman movie about three guys who travel to the moon. But, due to an equipment malfunction, they are unable to land on the surface of the moon.
Unfortunately, science does not support the theory that men have traveled to the moon. In reality, no human has traveled more than 400 miles into space. So the film Apollo 13 should be considered fiction.
(Since we did not really go to the moon, what did NASA do with the billions of dollars that they received from U.S. taxpayers? Did they use it to fund films like Apollo 13?
Should Ron Howard be arrested for making this film?
Or does Ron Howard really believe that we went to the moon? And what about Henry Winkler? Does Henry Winkler believe that we went to the moon?)
The acting in Apollo 13 is great. But, because of the unrealistic storyline, I can't give more than two stars.
(This is an updated review. I originally gave Apollo 13 only one star back in Feb '07. But I watched it again recently and decided to add one star in my rating because of the great acting.)
Best space movie ever
2008-05-18 - Yes, it beats all the fictional space movies--because it is true. And even though everyone knows (or should know) what happened, it is still a nail-biter the first time viewed and can hold your interest on multiple viewings.
Great movie, but the HD is not as impressive as some.
2008-04-23 - I bought this disc knowing that it would make a good impression in my home theater on HD. While it does not disappoint, I have seen other HD material that is superior.
Apollo 13
2008-04-06 - Excellent effects, especially during Saturn V launch sequence. Commentary by Astronaut James Lovell provides a good historical perspective.
HD-DVD Apollo 13-the version to own
2008-03-21 - If you don't own an HD-DVD player stop now. Yes the format is dead-and NO I am not sorry one whit I bought one. That aside, this movie is reviewed in detail elsewhere, so I'm just dealing with the HD-DVD version and how it stacks up against the other formats. I've owned the regular DVD and the laserdisc version of this movie- and this one is SOOO much better. Crystal clear picture with remarkable detail. The space sequences are breathtaking in beauty. The launch sequence is a great demo- though not as aggressive on the subwoofer as I'd expected or hoped for. Well worth the bargain price now that the format war is over. As an aside- if you need a new dvd player consider an HD-DVD player. They're on sale and GREAT upconverters for regular DVD's- and as a bonus, play true HD-DVD movies. I expect getting years of enjoyment from mine.
