  • Editorial Review:
This Western has become a modest cult favorite since its release in 1993, when the film was met with mixed reviews but the performances of Kurt Russell (as Wyatt Earp) and especially Val Kilmer, for his memorably eccentric performance as the dying gunslinger Doc Holliday, garnered high praise. The movie opens with Wyatt Earp trying to put his violent past behind him, living happily in Tombstone with his brothers and the woman (Dana Delany) who puts his soul at ease. But a murderous gang called the Cowboys has burst on the scene, and Earp can't keep his gun belt off any longer. The plot sounds routine, and in many ways it is, but Western buffs won't mind a bit thanks to a fine cast and some well-handled action on the part of Rambo director George P. Cosmatos, who has yet to make a better film than this. --Jeff Shannon

    Tombstone [Region 2] Reviews:
Epic movie making 5 Star Review
2008-09-27 - In my humble opinion, Tombstone is one of the best westerns made. I wasn't looking for a history lesson, I can watch the history channel for that. I was looking for movie entertainment at it's hyperbolic best. Every character; the good, the bad, the ugly are over the top. This movie is fun. I watched Kevin Costner's Wyatt Earp and was continually yawning. I loved the portrayal of Curly Bill in Tombstone, just capital. Ringo is intellectually maniacal. And dear Ike, as dufus as he is, he's practical. This is western mythology and story telling at its best. A factual history lesson, no; a grand cinematic yarn, resoundingly, yes!

Tombstone the definitive western story 5 Star Review
2008-09-15 - Becoming if not already a classic tale of Wyatt Earp and his family and friends. Excellent cast and outstanding performances. A truly moving and sometimes shocking view into the "wild" west and beyond.

Political Correctness In The Old West 3 Star Review
2008-09-01 - Didn't know how Feministic the women were in the old West, or how open society was to bi-sexuality. Plently of unsubtle dabbling in these themes - although anachronism is part of the B+ movie lexicon.
The best moment comes from the very sensuous, under-appreciated actor Dana Delany: she steps off the Coach as she arrives in town and shares a rapturous, prolonged glance with Kurt Russell (Wyatt Earp). Her close-up is enough to wake Truman Capote (All due respect...).
Val Kilmer does okay as Doc Holliday - I think he might have unconsciously refereced Brando in "Mutiny On The Bounty", but here he seems slighlty less interested in the fairer sex. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Cinematography is excellent and the picture is well-paced.

    Great movie 5 Star Review
2008-08-01 - I can look at this movie over and over again. The added scenes and interactive game make it worth the price

Tombstone Director's Cut hits the mark. 5 Star Review
2008-07-17 - I bought this movie for my father for Father's Day and he absolutely loves it. The features make this DVD a cut above of the already amazing original. I think that as man who grew up watching John Wayne and Clint Eastwood westerns, to say that Tombstone is my dad's favorite western is truly remarkable. It is my favorite as well.
