Editorial Review:
In the great tradition of SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS and CINDERELLA, Disney's 11th animated masterpiece, THE ADVENTURES OF ICHABOD AND MR. TOAD, introduced two literary classics to the screen. Through award-winning Disney-animated wizardry, these unforgettable children's stories come together as one fabulous adventure. THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS follows the wild ride of J. Thaddeus Toad, squire of Toad Hall. Smitten with motorcars, the wealthy and reckless sportsman soon drives his close friends Mole, Rat, and Angus MacBadger into a worried frenzy! Then meet Ichabod Crane, the spindly schoolteacher who dreams of sweeping the lovely Katrina off her feet -- until Brom Bones, the town bully, gets involved. Their comic rivalry introduces Ichabod to THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW, the fabled Headless Horseman, and a hair-raising, heart-thumping climax. Narrated by legendary stars Basil Rathbone and Bing Crosby, THE ADVENTURES OF ICHABOD AND MR. TOAD is brimming with high-spirited adventure, brilliant animation, and captivating music -- now available for the first time in keeping with Walt's original theatrical vision.
Description of The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (Disney Gold Classic Collection):
This 1949 Disney feature has never been available on video in its original form until now. The 68-minute film contains two shorts: The Wind in the Willows and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The former is a lively version of Kenneth Grahame's book of animal adventures, including Mr. Toad, a rambunctious sort with a passion for motorcars. Basil Rathbone narrates the story. Sleepy Hollow is the Washington Irving story of a stuffy schoolmaster and his ability to win the love of the fair Katrina from the brutish Brom Van Brunt. Many fans will see a resemblance to Disney's masterpiece created some 40 years later, Beauty and the Beast, in style and story. The end is still scary enough to send youngsters under the table. Bing Crosby supplies the narration, character voices, and songs. The opening number in a library including two stories has been included in this good-looking restoration. The shorts were made in Disney's prime, a year before Cinderella, and the look is wondrous. The exaggeration of Ichabod's skinny frame and his slumping horse is a glorious example. --Doug Thomas
The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (Disney Gold Classic Collection) Reviews:
Great product
2009-12-17 - I've always enjoyed watching this Disney classic on halloween night with my children. The product was in great shape. Thank you.
Two movie shorts
2009-12-09 - The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad is one hour and seven minutes long and was released in theaters on October 5, 1949. This was Disney eleventh animated film and the last of the six package films. Starting with Cinderella in 1950 Disney Studios would return to full length features again. The movie is a combination of two stories. First is the Wind in the Willows narrated by Basil Rathbone. The Wind in the Willows tells the story of J. Thaddeus Toad who is the Lord of Toad Hall. Mr. Toad is a happy-go-lucky, reckless, and careless about financial responsibilities. He has built up quite a large some of debt indulging in his hobbies and having disregarding other people properties. One day riding on his horse Cyril Proudbottom, he spots a motor car and right away he wants one. On his arrival home he shows off his new car to his friends Ratty (Water Rat), Moley (Mole) and Angus MacBadger. He is arrested at his manor and put on trial for car theft. At Mr. Toad's trial, the tavern keeper, Mr. Winkie, delivers false testimony that Mr. Toad try to sell him a stolen car. Mr. Toad is thrown in prison. It is Christmas and Cyril visits him disguised as his grandmother. Cyril helps Mr. Toad escapes from prison and Mr. Toad makes his way over to his friends home. It is there we learn that Mr. Winkie does have a deed to Toad Hall and Mr. Toad was right about the trade. Mr. Toad, Ratty, Moley, and Angus sneak back into Toad Hall and steal the deed from Mr. Winkie and Mr. Toad is found innocence of his crime. Toad Hall is now in the ownership of Mr. Toad once again. In the end Mr. Toad is back to reckless life once again.
In the second story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Bing Crosby does the narration and provides all the voices. Ichabod Crane is the new schoolmaster of Sleepy Hollow who is very tall and gangly and lankly looking. Ichabod falls in love with Katrina Van Tassel who is the only child of wealthy farm owner Baltus Van Tassel. This makes Brom Bones very jealous and tries to break up Ichabod and Katrina. Finally on Halloween Brom gets his chance to get rid of Ichabod. At the yearly Halloween party given by Baltus Van Tassel, Brom tells the story of the Headless Horseman. This story frightens Ichabod very much. It is told that the Headless Horseman comes out at night looking for a new head and the only way to defeat him is to cross the bridge that is at the town entrance and once on the other side you are safe. Ichabod begins the slow ride home on his horse and begins to get frighten of the night. He begins to hear and see things that make him believe he is being followed by the Headless Horseman. Soon the Headless Horseman shows up and the chase is on to get to the other side of the bridge. Once on the other side Ichabod think he is safe, but the Headless Horseman throws a fiery Jack-o-lantern across the bridge. The next day the townsfolk find Ichabod Crane's hat and a smashed pumpkin but Ichabod Crane is nowhere to be found. Brom Bones marries Katrina Van Tassel.
Both short films are very good to watch but you do miss Disney full length features animation movies. The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad get an AA++.

Childhood Favorite
2009-11-30 - I loved this little movie since I was a kid. Even in my early twenties, I would turn down the lights on Halloween night and watch this on TV. But, they stopped showing it, or at least I couldn't find it and I haven't seen it in quite awhile. I'm planning on watching this as a yearly Halloween tradition.
