Editorial Review:
THE BLACK CROWES will release their new studio CD, Before the Frost...
via the band's Silver Arrow and Megaforce Records. A second album, titled ...Until The Freeze, will be given away for free exclusively through a unique download code included in Before The Frost... CD as a thank you to their fans for two decades of support. A limited-edition vinyl release of Before The Frost...Until The Freeze, featuring all 20 tracks, will also be available.
Before the Frost...features 11 new unreleased Black Crowes' studio songs. The free album ...Until The Freeze has 8 new original Black Crowes' studio songs plus a cover version of the Stephen Stills classic "So Many Times."
Before the Frost..., and its corresponding free album ...Until The Freeze, were recorded over a series of five nights at Levon Helm Studios. Although both are studio albums, all the new material was performed and recorded in front of an intimate audience of the band s fans.
Chris Robinson conceived the innovative concept of Before the Frost...Until The Freeze:
I think we fulfilled a musical commitment to continue on the golden road of artistic independence. Approaching 20 years into our careers, we still are ambitious enough to push ourselves to create somethin g unique that we have never done before.
As The Black Crowes approach the upcoming 20th anniversary of their release of one of rock s most influential records, Shake Your Money Maker, which produced such hits as Jealous Again, She Talks To Angels and Hard to Handle, they are time and again hailed as one of Rock and Roll s best live acts.
Before The Frost....Until The Freeze Reviews:
Vintage Black Crowes
2009-12-04 - Its been a while since a bought a Black Crowes cd. Forgot what a great band they are. This is old school Black Crowes. Highly recommend it to any Black Crowes fan!
Refreshing Change
2009-12-01 - I must admit that I haven't owned a Black Crowes CD since "Shake Your Money Maker", which was in a class all by itself. I decided to purchase "Before the Frost" upon reading other Amazon reviews and because I have not listened to anything from the Crowes in a while. What a Great album, great lyrics, great songs, music etc...
Just a good album to listen to anytime
Incredible album
2009-12-01 - Having been a huge fan of The Black Crowes since they first burst on the scene back in 1989, I've always admired them for sticking to a simple plan - rock out with honesty and some balls and people will follow. Add in a truly gifted lead singer with some much needed swagger and attitude and you've got the makings for a rock band destined to fizzle out after two or three albums. Or so the theory goes.
Twenty years after their debut, The Black Crowes have evolved in a way that very few bands can take credit for. Without losing focus on their initial simple plan, they seem to get better with every album and I've truly enjoyed their work over the years.
With Before the Frost...Until the Freeze, I started playing it thinking it would just be ok. Why I doubted them, I have no idea. This album is incredible and the heart and soul of their musicianship is very much intact. In an era of pop stars formed via American Idol when artists can burst onto the scene overnight despite never creating anything of artist value (yeah, call me old fashioned), a band like The Black Crowes should be cherished for what they are - a band with some attitude, the ability to write great rock-n-roll riffs, an amazing lead singer and (for those lucky enough to see them in person), one of the truly best live bands working today.

The Black Crowes - Their Best?
2009-11-30 - After putting out the mediocre "Lions" album and then breaking up for several years, The Black Crowes made a nice creative comeback with "Warpaint" in 2007. The comeback continues with "Before The Frost", an album of all new material recorded live before a small audience in upstate New York. I am really enjoying this album and will take a bold step in stating that this may be my all time favorite Black Crowes release. The album is really quite mellow in spots with country, blues and folk influences abounding throughout the material. That is not to say that the album does not rock in spots including the second track "Been A Long Time" which features a smoking jam at the end showcasing the talents of guitarist Luther Dickson. The album even includes a disco song "I Ain't Hiding" which on paper should never work, but is surprisingly one of the highlights of the album. I normally loathe anything that comes close to disco, but not only is this song infectious, but it manages to rock as well. There is not really a weak track on the disc. "Good Morning Captain", "Appaloosa", "Houston Don't Dream About Me", and "The Last Place That Love Hides", are all slow and mellow, but retain great lyrics and a down home almost country feel. The songwriting on this album is top notch throughout ranks right up with the best this band has come up with. All in all if you are a Crowes fan this album is a must purchase. It may not rock as hard as some of its predecessors, but the band prove that they are still a force to be reckoned with 20 years after their formation.
The Music Takes You Deeper With Each Listen
2009-11-22 - Having bought Shake Your Money Maker when it came out (along with 3 million others), I've supported this band by purchasing every release since. I haven't always been blown away (Lions was a so-so release). However, live versions of this bands' music always seem to surpass the studio versions. This album was recorded live in a studio, with a small audience, sort of mixing the formats to create a unique feeling. The audience is only audible at the end of each song, and only briefly.
The real beauty of this album shines through on the companion disc "...Until The Freeze". As other reviewers have remarked, I am not a big country or bluegrass fan. However, the depth that Rich Robinson brings to acoustic and pedal steel guitar combined with Chris Robinson's soulful singing really take this band to a new and deeper level. I find myself experiencing different levels of emotion listening to songs like "Greenhorn", "Lady of Avenue A", "The Last Place That Love Lives", "So Many Times", and "Fork In The River". Each listen comes with a new sense of feeling and understanding. THIS MUSIC IS THAT DEEP.
"Been A Long Time" is a great evolution of this band showcasing their true extended jam skills with the song ending in a rousing tapestry of driving rock sound. The real beauty of this album is that it is a unique, artistic experiment that displays real growth in the musicians. They take this music to places they have never gone before and create sounds you would not expect from a typical "Rock" band of 20 years. It is my favorite disc of 2009, easily, and one of their best.
In this age of commercially fabricated "artists" and commercial product marketing "tie-ins" with "pop-stars", this band is creating music as an artistic expression. It is bands like this one that need our support, before all we are left with is music created by corporations.
