Editorial Review:
THE BLACK CROWES will release their new studio CD, Before the Frost...
via the band's own Silver Arrow label and Megaforce Records. A second album, titled ...Until The Freeze, will be given away for free exclusively through a unique download code included in Before The Frost... CD as a thank you to their fans for two decades of support. A limited-edition vinyl release of Before The Frost...Until The Freeze, featuring all 20 tracks, will also be available.
Before the Frost...features 11 new unreleased Black Crowes' studio songs. The free album ...Until The Freeze has 8 new original Black Crowes' studio songs plus a cover version of the Stephen Stills classic "So Many Times."
Before the Frost..., and its corresponding free album ...Until The Freeze, were recorded over a series of five nights at Levon Helm Studios. Although both are studio albums, all the new material was performed and recorded in front of an intimate audience of the band s fans.
Chris Robinson conceived the innovative concept of Before the Frost...Until The Freeze:
I think we fulfilled a musical commitment to continue on the golden road of artistic independence. Approaching 20 years into our careers, we still are ambitious enough to push ourselves to create somethin g unique that we have never done before.
As The Black Crowes approach the upcoming 20th anniversary of their release of one of rock s most influential records, Shake Your Money Maker, which produced such hits as Jealous Again, She Talks To Angels and Hard to Handle, they are time and again hailed as one of Rock and Roll s best live acts.
...Until The Freeze tracklisting:
Aimless Peacock
The Shady Grove
The Garden Gate
Greenhorn
Shine Along
Roll Old Jeremiah
Lady Of Avenue A
So Many Times
Fork In The River
Before the Frost...Until the Freeze Reviews:
Never Gets Old
2009-12-21 - It was quite a surprise the day this album came out. While I'm a huge crowes fan, I never really got into Warpaint, and then I found this album on amazon and downloaded it. In a year where tons of my favorite bands have released new disks, I never thought this would be my favorite. Honestly, I was happy to have the crowes back but didn't think they'd ever make an album that reaches the heights of their first four. Well this is it.
I think the original track list is too much to listen to all at once, but I really loved the LP playlist. I've been listening to that so much that I bought the actually LP at a live show. The LP has great artwork and lyrics too. This tracklisting balances the upbeat rock and country style that makes it flow much better.
This album has the feeling of all of the great cover songs that the band plays live, but they have taken the styles and made them their own. I'm not in love with every song, but some never get old. I find myself needing this album on a daily basis. Very relaxing and rewarding.
Totally New Material From the Crowes, You can watch it being recorded on the DVD "Cabin Fever"!!!!!!
2009-12-19 - This is an excellent album of all new material from the Crowes. This was a very innovative album, because of the way they recorded it. It was recorded, mostly before a live audience, and you can see the entire recording of this album on the DVD "Black Crowes - Cabin Fever".
The line-up is as follows:
Chris Robinson - lead singer, guitars & other
Rich Robinson - guitar & other
Steve Gorman - drums, percussion
Sven Pipien -Bass & other
Luther Dickinson - guitar, mandolin (includes some great slide guitar work)
Adam MacDougall - Keyboards & other
The songs are as follows:
Before the Frost:
1.Good Morning Captain
2.Been a Long Time
3.Appaloosa
4.A Train still Makes a Lonely Sound
5.I Ain't Hiding
6.Kept my Soul
7.What is Home
8.Houston don't Dream About Me
9.Make Glad
10.And the Band Played On
11.The Last Place that Love Lives
Until the Freeze: (Note: On this one you get a plastic card, included in the "Before the Frost" CD package. It has a code on it where you can go to the Black Crowes website, and download this additional CD.)
1.Aimless Peacock
2.The Shady Grove
3.The Garden Gate
4.Breenhorn
5.Shine Along
6.Roll Old Jeremiah
7.Lady of Avenue A
8.So Many Times
9.Fork in the River
Overall, this album & the accompaning DVD "Cabin Fever" (sold separately), are very innovative. The music on the album CD's are great, and you can watch it being recorded on the DVD "Cabin Fever". I highly recommend both, and I applaud the Black Crowes innovative & pioneering spirit, by creating this amazing combination of sound & video. Thanks!!!!
Vintage Black Crowes
2009-12-04 - Its been a while since a bought a Black Crowes cd. Forgot what a great band they are. This is old school Black Crowes. Highly recommend it to any Black Crowes fan!
Refreshing Change
2009-12-01 - I must admit that I haven't owned a Black Crowes CD since "Shake Your Money Maker", which was in a class all by itself. I decided to purchase "Before the Frost" upon reading other Amazon reviews and because I have not listened to anything from the Crowes in a while. What a Great album, great lyrics, great songs, music etc...
Just a good album to listen to anytime
Incredible album
2009-12-01 - Having been a huge fan of The Black Crowes since they first burst on the scene back in 1989, I've always admired them for sticking to a simple plan - rock out with honesty and some balls and people will follow. Add in a truly gifted lead singer with some much needed swagger and attitude and you've got the makings for a rock band destined to fizzle out after two or three albums. Or so the theory goes.
Twenty years after their debut, The Black Crowes have evolved in a way that very few bands can take credit for. Without losing focus on their initial simple plan, they seem to get better with every album and I've truly enjoyed their work over the years.
With Before the Frost...Until the Freeze, I started playing it thinking it would just be ok. Why I doubted them, I have no idea. This album is incredible and the heart and soul of their musicianship is very much intact. In an era of pop stars formed via American Idol when artists can burst onto the scene overnight despite never creating anything of artist value (yeah, call me old fashioned), a band like The Black Crowes should be cherished for what they are - a band with some attitude, the ability to write great rock-n-roll riffs, an amazing lead singer and (for those lucky enough to see them in person), one of the truly best live bands working today.
