Description of Black Box: The Complete Original Black Sabbath (1970-1978):
One can make the case that the Beatles, while the most important band of all time, wasn't the most influential. Decades after Black Sabbath laid down the commandments of heavy metal--lyrically, not for the squeamish; musically, dynamic and resolutely heavy--their impact remains improbably undiminished. One needed only to hear the first notes of the eponymous track on their eponymous 1970 debut to know that a new régime had arrived. And while one could (and should!) have mocked them, they would not be stopped. Black Box includes the eight albums recorded between 1970 and 1978 by the founding lineup--Tony Iommi, Bill Ward, Ozzy Osbourne, and Geezer Butler--in one suitably weighty package. Forgoing bonus tracks (aside from an entertaining but brief four-track DVD extra), the box is rounded off with an impressive 80-page booklet. While the foursome was considerably less fearsome by the time they checked out with Never Say Die, more than half of this collection represents heavy metal with a lasting impact. --Steven Stolder

Black Box: The Complete Original Black Sabbath (1970-1978) Reviews:
the ozzy years 5 Star Review
2009-10-04 - all ozzy/sabbath cd's in one package. all cd's sound crystal clear.remember these masters date back to 1969(30years),so even with remastering they are not gonna sound like they were recorded last week.they should thrown in the 2 studio cuts off of the reunion live cd too.

REALLY REMASTERED??? IT'S MORE LOUD BUT NOT REALLY BETTER.... 2 Star Review
2009-08-30 - I bought this box and let me say something: these cd's sounds more loud but NOT BETTER than other previously remastered versions... Yes, you can get a nice book... a extra dvd (rare videos???) and all the Ozzy's Black Sabbath albums but... not the original art, not the better sound and a cheap poor pack if you compared with others collections o boxes(For 90 $$$???). If you have the Sanctuary or Castle remastered albums this Box is really unnecesary...
If you want to made a "upgrade" of your Sabbath collection go for the new 2009 remastered and deluxe packs of Black Sabbath, Paranoid and Master of Reality... Great sound, new and rare songs and beauty new packs.

sabbath 5 Star Review
2009-08-26 - beautiful, erie, ozzy preaches love and Jesus and common scence.
Ozzy, The father of metal.

Sound Quality is vastly improved 5 Star Review
2009-08-06 - My BS cd's were old and scratchy. I bought this black box. Yeah they sound good. I push alot of wattage in my vehicles and these CD's hold up very well. No bass dumping or over emphasized hiss. Very good remastering. Now Bill Wards drums... they really jumps from the speakers. Now I have a chimp and if I play BS too loud now he runs out of the room and wont come back to that part of the house. Some times the music causes a dog vs ape fight so I have to be careful. I was going to take a star off for the violence but I wont cause of the improved sound quality.

Every home needs one 5 Star Review
2009-07-21 - If heavy metal had a Bible, then this box set would be the Five Books of Moses. That is, this box represents the foundations of pretty much all heavy music from the early '70s on, and as such, is about as essential as rock music gets.

I won't belabor the points others have made. Pretty much everything here is highly listenable, powerful rock. The sound is by far the best of any Sabbath reissue. Everything is appropriately loud and clear, without the now-commonplace over-compression which mars a lot of remasters. These CDs sound as close to mint copies of the vinyl as possible. The DVD is kind of superfluous, but a nice addition to the audio contents. Also, the packaging is terrific, with its "None More Black" aesthetic. Basically, if you are in any way a fan of Black Sabbath, 70s metal, or heavy rock in general, you need these albums in some form. This just happens to be the most convenient from to get all of the Ozzy-era stuff. You can't rightly call yourself a metal fan unless you own some Black Sabbath--here's a nice way to get the best of it.
