Editorial Review:
The hit Broadway musical by Peter Stone and Sherman Edwards became the basis for this 1972 film about America's first congress and the nation's declaration of independence from Britain. Most of the original cast members are aboard, including William Daniels as John Adams. The film is a little stodgy and moves stiffly from scene to scene--the adaptation to the screen is not a smooth success. But it is nonetheless captivating, considering that so few films have dealt directly with America's birth. Directed by Peter H. Hunt. --Tom Keogh
1776 (Restored Director's Cut) Reviews:
a musical that breaks all the rules
2009-12-02 - 1776 is about as manly of a musical as is humanly possible. This is a wonderful production of a musical that breaks all the rules. There are long periods without music, there are only two female cast members, and oddly enough it is one of the more accurate movies on the American War of Independence available. Many wonderful facts are humorously inserted; there are fewer liberties taken with history in this production than other films that claim to be historical.
The reinsertion of the song "Cool, Considerate Men" (not available on the VHS version) is delightful, after only hearing it previously on the CD.
William Daniels plays John Adams well and has frequently reprised this role as a narrator in other productions.
Let's face it....Howard Da Silva was born to play Benjamin Franklin.
I have frequently recommended this film over the years. My daughter has loved the film since she was three, thirteen years later she still loves it!
Very Disappointed
2009-09-20 - I purchased this DVD some time ago, but decided that it would be appropriate to watch on Constitution Day. I was stunned at the ongoing cursing and taking the Lord's name in vain, especially for a movie 37 years old. I took it out and put it in the trash.
humorously interesting
2009-09-13 - Considering that it was made in 1972, probably on a limited budget, it is a very interesting and educational look at what the founding fathers went to in order to achieve our independence. If you can overlook the at times corny bits, (I never thought I'd see Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin dancing down a staircase together) It was well worth the money, and a good watch for anyone interested in American History.
Outstanding quality
2009-09-03 - I can't say enough about how good the quality of the DVD is. The clarity is outstanding, the sound quality is great! I enjoyed every moment of watching it.
Musical History
2009-08-18 - Taken from the broadway play, with a marvelous cast, I love either seeing this on television or watching it around the 4th of July. A good history lesson and good tunes.
