Editorial Review:
Japanese pressing of the 18th album in this Rock and Roll Hall of Famer's remarkable career features the earliest release. It's her first album ever to bear the credit Produced by Bonnie Raitt. The album features sounds ranging from the swampy groove and electronic loops of 'Deep Water' to the crystalline lament 'I Don't Want Anything to Change'. Throughout, Raitt's unparalleled slide guitar playing is pushed to sizzling new heights. Songs like 'The Bed I Made' and the edgy, angular 'Crooked Crown' address complex emotions-thorny, adult themes. The first single lifted from the album is 'I Will Not Be Broken'. EMI. 2005.
Description of Souls Alike:
After almost 35 years of recording, Bonnie Raitt knows exactly who she is and what she wants, as Souls Alike, the first self-produced album of her career, attests. Though Raitt wrote none of the material, the selection bears her imprint and highlights both her strengths and her range. The album's opening "I Will Not Be Broken" provides the sort of signature, stick-to-your-guns affirmation for Raitt that "My Way" did for Frank Sinatra and "I Won't Back Down" did for Tom Petty. Two songs written by pianist Jon Cleary, "Love on One Condition" and "Unnecessary Mercenary," reflect the Little Feat-in-New Orleans side to Raitt's music, while the reggae underpinnings of "God Was in the Water," the electro-worldbeat of "Deep Water," and the slide-guitar funk of "Trinkets" find her settling naturally into a variety of grooves. Though she makes a sharp left turn into the sonic surrealism of "Crooked Crown," she returns to the reflective balladry that has marked her musical maturity with "So Close," "I Don't Want Anything to Change," and the jazzy sophistication of the closing "The Bed I Made." While there are few surprises here, the album ranks with the most soul-satisfying of Raitt's career. --Don McLeese

Souls Alike Reviews:
Hard to Get Out of My Stereo
2009-11-14 - "Souls Alike" is a great title for this record because it's got soul which runs through all eleven tracks. Bonnie didn't write anything here, but I don't see that it matters, she did such a masterful job in choosing her material. And I would have a very hard time imagining any of the writers delivering better versions of these tunes. Bonnie's voice is crystal clear and emotional throughout. She also produced the record, further evidence of her enormous talent. If you're even mildly interested in Bonnie you should try this out.
This might not be the best Bonnie Raitt disc to start with
2009-05-08 - however... this was where I started with getting some much needed Bonnie in my collection. I enjoy a wide range of musical styles. My collection contains a large amount of blues and jazz, but I also have some great rock albums and some pop too. I even have some country in the form of Willie Nelson. While I hesitate to say that this is a great record, I find it very enjoyable, and it is a welcomed addition to my collection. It was pretty much what I was expecting, and while there weren't any big surprises here for me, it was definitely not a let down. I would have started with her earlier albums, but this was the only Bonnie album in the store that I was in besides her greatest hits. This is overall not as bluesy as some of her albums. I would say that it is more a bluesy pop music album. In any case there is no shortage of her slide guitar playing here. There are also some ballads on here that I found really good. This is a solid Bonnie Raitt album, and though I would have preferred starting with her early bluesy albums this one did not disappoint me.
Not my favorite
2007-10-19 - If you like Bonnie's Road Tested or Luck of the Draw, this is NOT the album for you. It's along the lines of Fundamental which is one of my least favorites. Hard to find a track to sing along with....
Bonnie Raitt's ew hit
2007-08-01 - If a fan of blues and especially Bonnie Raitt, you may have seen her on "Breakfast with the Arts" this summer, performing from her new album. She also showcased many of her other albums, which prompted me to buy this one. It explores some avenues of creativity and maturity in life and being a song writer. People will probably either like or dislike the changes in style. However, Bonnie Raitt is a performer and worth trying some of the audio samples if unsure whether you want to buy it or not.
Good, but I like the OLD Bonnie better!
2007-03-30 - The styling on this CD was unlike any other Bonnie Raitt CD I've ever heard. Takes some getting used to!
