SciFi Classics 50 Movie Pack Collection Reviews:
Classic Sci-Fi Cheese
2009-08-27 - Okay, if anyone out there has any nostalgic memories of watching old, low-budget flicks on some hoaky local station's "Chiller Theater" or just want to see some of the films that gave the guys on Mystery Science Theater 3000 plenty of comic material, then this set is for you. This isn't the good stuff as classic sci-fi goes; this is public domain, the "how-not-to-make-a-movie" stuff, even a low-budget one.
Most sci-fi fans will be disappointed to find that some of these films are of a genre unrelated to sci-fi; some will make you gringe. I'm not going to go into a lengthy breakdown, but one clear case in point is Mesa of Lost Women; this laxative will have have you wanting to run. The movie is supposed to be a horror, but the real horror is the acting and music (which is part burnt-out mariachi, part "lady who plays piano for all the school plays"). The music will not let up on your nerves. One plus to this set is that it's the perfect cure for mild insomnia and why I affectionately refer to it as "cheese". Like cheese it... ages well, some of it really stinks, but too much will put you on lockdown.
Too much garbage included
2009-08-17 - If you have hours to waste, buy this; otherwise it is a waste of time and money.
Great movies at a great price
2009-08-16 - Sure, these are old corny movies, but that's why we love them, right? This collection is great value for your money. These movies are in the public domain, but getting 50 movies for $[...] bucks is a deal, cheaper and better quality than streaming or downloading. There are many gems in the box, such as movies directed by William Wilder, the brother of Billy Wilder. It's fun to watch great actors so early in their career, for example, Peter Graves and Raymond Burr.
BTW, I have not yet watched them all, but so far I have found that three movies are not what is labeled on the paper jackets or on the CD, but not to worry, it's all good!
Final verdict, one year later: recommended!
2009-08-11 - I purchased this set one year ago and watched one movie per week. It was a most enjoyable endeavour. I'd say about 40 out of 50 movies were interesting enough, many very much so, particularly if you're into vintage special effects and B-movies ambiance.
And the current edition sports a much more appropriate and nicer picture on the cover.
Recommended.
What a deal
2009-07-23 - I bought about a fourth of these movies and they were very economically priced, however even with duplicates this pack would be worth purchasing. Many of them are Roger Corman classics. Others are so bad that you have to watch then to tell people that you too have eclectic tastes. The individual titles come and go so get them all while you can.
Be sure to read all the individual reviews (after you buy the collection).
A few of highlights:
The Incredible Petrified World - 66 minutes long
Queen of the Amazons - original title "Amazons and Gladiators"
Robot Monster - terminator in a fur suit
She Gods of Shark Reef - natives and sharks but no She Gods
The Amazing Transparent Man - you can see through this one
The Wasp Woman - a stinging performance
Santa Claus Conquers The Martians - it is an abduction story
Teenagers From Outer Space - so what is new?
Crash of the Moons (Rocky Jones) - female ruler with a nasty attitude
Mesa of Lost Women - Horrible background music
Killers From Space - saw this as a kid - still spooky - Ping-Pong ball eyes
Zontar, the Thing From Venus - rubber Venusians
There are a few glaring omissions including "The Crawling Eye"
