  • Editorial Review:
Disney presents the smash hit comedy that families and critics everywhere went bananas over! Deep in the heart of the African jungle, a baby named George, the sole survivor of a plane crash, is raised by gorillas. George grows up to be a buff and lovable klutz (ENCINO MAN'S Brendan Fraser) who has a rain forest full of animal friends -- like Tookie, his big-beaked messenger, Ape, a talking gorilla who's smarter than your average rocket scientist, and Shep, a gray-haired peanut-loving pooch of an elephant! When poachers mess with George's pals, the King Of Swing swings into action. But before you can say, "Watch out for that tree," George comes face-to-bark with a few vine-covered obstacles! You'll go wild for this "wonderfully wacky comedy" that People Magazine calls "impossible to resist!"

Description of George of the Jungle:
Not even the executives at Disney could have predicted the runaway success of this live-action movie inspired by Jay Ward's goofy 1960s cartoon character. Not only did George make a killing at the box office, but Disney's marketing wizards turned it into one of their best-selling videos. It's hard to begrudge the movie's success, even if this is the kind of mindless entertainment that caters to the lowest common denominator. In any case, it's obvious that kids love this movie, in which the idiotic George (Brendan Fraser) repeatedly swings into trees and attracts the attention of a lovely jungle explorer (Leslie Mann) who decides to call off her engagement to a wealthy snob (Thomas Hayden Church) in favor of the vine-swinging hunk with an elephant named Shep (that thinks it's a dog) and an ape named Ape (with a proper Brit voice provided by John Cleese). Filled with slapstick gags and some funny special effects, the movie can be a bit of a trial for adults, but it's a hilarious treat for its intended audience. --Jeff Shannon

George of the Jungle 5 Star Review
2009-12-26 - This is a great movie. Good, clean, silly fun. Good for the whole family.

Disney is behind the times. 4 Star Review
2009-02-17 - This movie is well made and absolutely hilarious. However, the transfer is in pan and scan. Just before the film, Disney has inserted a title card that says "this film has been formatted to fit your screen." What planet do the Disney people live on? Don't they know that most TVs today are widescreen? Fortunately, I used to collect laser discs. The laser disc version of this film was released only in widescreen, and I have it.

George of The Jungle 3 Star Review
2008-12-19 - Another Christmas gift for my grandson, as per his request. Again, he must have enjoyed it in the movie theater or wouldn't have asked for it....

Great Kid Movie 5 Star Review
2008-12-06 - George of the Jungle I have watched this movie many times with my three grandkids. They and I love the movie. It's funny, and has just enough innocent naughtiness for the grandsons to really like it (gorilla gas, poop, etc.) They also like George of the Jungle II.

great comedy for all ages 4 Star Review
2008-09-04 - Good-natured, family-oriented comedy about a clumsy ape man who lives in the jungle amongst the animals and never seems able to stop crashing into trees. During a safari, he encounters a beautiful damsel in distress (Mann) and immediately falls in love with her. Despite their differences in lifestyles, he leaves his beloved jungle and travels to the big city where he tries to win her affections and adapt to civilization. It more ways than one this inherently goofy, episodic film resembles an extended television series with zany characters and a predictable setup, but it's smart, funny, and the gags are right on target. Fraser, never more likable, is perfectly cast, aided by a sly narrator and an over-the-top Cleese who really scores as the voice of ape.
