Editorial Review:
Michael Douglas is "tremendous" (Tribune News Services) inthe psychological thriller "in the classic Hitchcock tradition" (The New York Observer). When The daughter of a prominent new York psychiatrist (Douglas) is kidnapped, his only hope for her safe return is to pry a 6-digit number from the memory of a troubled teenage girl - and time is running out!
Description of Don't Say a Word:
Adapted from Andrew Klavan's bestselling suspense novel, Don't Say a Word is a suitable companion to director Gary Fleder's earlier hit Kiss the Girls, with solid performances serving a plot that begins promisingly. The tension starts when the daughter of a topnotch New York psychiatrist (Michael Douglas) is kidnapped by a bitter ex-con (Sean Bean) with an old score to settle. Aided by an unwitting colleague (Oliver Platt), Douglas can save his daughter by extracting crucial information from a traumatized patient (Brittany Murphy), while his bedridden wife (Famke Janssen) and a tenacious detective (Jennifer Esposito) do their part to solve the mystery. Fleder pushes all the routine buttons with effectively somber style, so Don't Say a Word will satisfy anyone with a preference for high-anxiety thrillers, even as it grows increasingly conventional; it's entertaining without being particularly original. It's a by-the-book programmer, just right for rainy-day viewing. --Jeff Shannon
Don't Say a Word Reviews:
Intense
2009-10-08 - Michael Dougles's performance in this intense thriller is awesome. this movie will keep you guessing and on the edge of your seat. this movie is awesome. britney murphy is awesome as well
Decent Kidnap Story Worth A Look
2009-02-09 - Here's another interesting kidnap story. Sean Bean always plays a believable villain and Michael Douglas usually plays roles that keep the audience's attention....so the almost- two hours go by pretty quickly. The whole cast, actually, pretty good with no one person standing out.
The story loses points because the ending goes on too long and has the standard villain-holds-the-gun-and-doesn't shoot-too long cliché which drives critics, me included, crazy. That, and a bit too many f-words in here by the female cop (Jennifer Esposito) which simply aren't necessary.
A few other credibility holes all reduce this from a sure 4-star to a "3.....but don't misunderstand: it's worth a look
"I'll never tell..."
2008-05-09 - Don't Say a Word is a confusing suspense film. There is absolutely no logic from the criminals perspective or anyone else for that matter. Michael Douglas looks so bored in this, his weakest performance ever. Brittany Murphy is the only thing captivating about this film, that girl is a rare talent. I cannot recommend this film because the plot is pointless, skip this one!
A Nice litte thriller
2008-04-01 - Don't Say A Word is a very good thriller. Michael Douglas in the lead plays a father who has to ge ta number from a crazed mental patient to help save his daughter. The film has very good acting and cinematography and the always sexy Jennifer Esposito.
PREDICTABLE? I think not!
2007-07-10 - If you were able to predict the ending of this one, you're a better man than I. This movie was spooky and chilling! Brittany Murphy plays her role very well and Michael Douglas is "on form". (Which is to say he gives it his all as always.)
It's an intense story and one you have to see to believe.
The line is given with such eerie believability....
"I'll never telllllll......"
