The Runaway Bunny/Paddington Bear's First Concert/Tubby the Tuba Reviews:
A wonderful musicical piece for children and adults to enjoy together!
2008-08-09 - I had no idea of what this new children's classic was about, much less the appeal it would provide to an adult. I have been familiar with Glen Roven' musical talents for years, so I was sure that The Runaway Bunny would measure up. My iPod has a selection for every mood, so I knew this would fit in one of the playlists.
I expected that the majority of the release would be of narration with the story incorparating Glen Roven's music as a background prop. Imagine my surprise and delight when I realized it was really a musical event for both inspiring children thoroughot using pauses in narration in between a concerto to highlight that wonderful music for adults to enjoy throughout (in addition to the story) I found the narrations made it truly unique and enjoyable for both children and big kids like me alike.
As usual, Glen Roven delivers, and you should buy his release even if you don't have children. I have it on my iPod, and find the music relaxing and the narration soothing. Congratulations to Mr. Roven on another brilliant performance.
What will I have to look forward from him next?
Bottom line: You owe it to yourself and children enjoy this together.
Tubby the Tuba, Runaway Bunny, Paddington Bear
2008-07-24 - I grew up with Tubby the Tuba(probably an old 78 recording). It was my favorite children's story. It was musical and I guess I was too. I purchased your CD with the intention of playing it for my grandchildren and I want to report they loved Tubby the best, probably because it was relatively short and the attention span was perfect for their age. Unexpectedly the Runaway Bunny was well received also-- especially the music which my three year old grandson visiting from San Francisco seemed to enjoy . That part took me by surprise though I enjoyed the Runaway Bunny music also. Paddington Bear was nice but much to long and it did not receive the attention it might deserve. Nonetheless, the purchase of this CD with three stories was worth it, certainly for Tubby who was the main reason for my purchase. I ended up with two additional stories. I may purchase three sets for all three families for a Christmas gift this year. There's too much TV and DVD stuff making the rounds. Old fashioned vocal story telling where the child envisages the setting should have a comeback. It's needed in today's world. Too many choices but clearly NPR and recordings like this one may save our grandchildren from the ravages of too much TV and DVD exposure. Congratulations on a fine recording. I hope others will discover or rediscover TUBBY the way I did. It's an American classic just like EB White's Stuart Little.
Loved by Children and Adults!!!
2008-06-17 - What an amazing piece of work! As a parent, I am so pleased that my children are exposed to such a masterful work of art and actually enjoy it. Not a day goes by that one of my children does not beg me to play "Runaway Bunny". The music is so moving and pulls you into the story. Glen Roven is a mastermind as he turns a wonderful children's story into a musical masterpiece. This is something to enjoy with the entire family!!!!!
The Best Rabbit-Themed Classical Music Work Since "What's Opera, Doc?".
2008-05-27 - Glen Roven's remarkable score to the Runaway Bunny, though written ostensibly for children, is full of musical ingenuity worthy of the adults who will listen to it with them. An excellent complement to the classic book, it will tickle the child's formative musical imagination.
Classic Book spawns a new classic
2008-05-08 - From the standpoint of a parent, it's great to see one of my son's favorite books come to life again, in a brand new form. From the standpoint of a musician and violinist, it's equally exciting to see to find this classic book at the heart of a fine new violin concerto by an important American composer.
Ittai Shapira's playing is at once expressive and virtuosic. Brooke Shields is spot-on in the vocal characterizations. The recording quality is superlative, as is the Royal Philharmonic under Stephen Fry. It's a fine concerto, splendidly written for the instrument, with the point and energy of Stravinsky, the warmth of Barber and the humor of Prokofiev, all wrapped in a wonderful mix. Glen Roven's Runaway Bunny deserves to take its place in the pantheon of great modern violin literature.
