  • Editorial Review:
It's been fifteen years since Roxy Carmichael left Clyde, Ohio, for fame and fortune. Now the town is excitedly planning for her homecoming. Among those anxiously awaiting her return: the forgotten boyfriend who fathered Roxy's child (Jeff Daniels); Roxy's rival (Dinah Manoff); and Dinky Bossetti (Winona Ryder), a gifted but eccentric 15-year-old girl who feels secretly tied to Roxy's past. Sparkling with heartfelt humor and warmth, Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael is a tender story of yearning and self-discovery. Of hopes, celebrity and dreams. And the importance of finding acceptance on one's own terms.

Description of Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael:
Blondie's Deborah Harry has said that as a little girl, she had hoped Marilyn Monroe was her mother. The fantasy of having a celebrity parent is not lost on 15-year-old Dinky Bossetti (Winona Ryder), who is positive that the glamorous Roxy Carmichael is indeed her birth mother. The 1990 film Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael is more about Dinky and the town's obsession with its one claim to fame than Roxy, who really isn't all that famous. (She had a song written about her.) Little seen and seldom heard, Roxy works more as a poetic device here, causing the townspeople of her small Midwestern hometown to get all worked up about her return home and delving into why their worth is tied to the glamorous life Roxy represents. Ryder was in her late teens when she tackled this role, and no amount of loose black clothing or surly demeanor can mask her gamine beauty. Still, she manages to pull off the role of the class outcast, who in all probability would've had a better life if her parents hadn't stuck her with the oddball name of "Dinky." As she explains to someone who is confused by her actions, "It's not for you to understand, really." But Dinky is a stubborn teenager who is sure that her life would have been better if it turned out that Roxy is her birth mother. Indeed, it could've been. Roxy had an affair with local landscaper Denton Webb (Jeff Daniels) and gave the baby up for adoption exactly 15 years ago. Hmmm. As it turns out, Dinky was adopted, too. The film is pleasant and Ryder is a joy to watch, but in terms of offering a compelling storyline, it's not much different from your average movie of the week. --Jae-Ha Kim

    Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael Reviews:
    Welcome home.... 5 Star Review
2008-12-22 - This has been one of my favorite movies for a long time. Dinky (Winona Ryder) is a 15 year old girl trying to fit into her own skin, but nobody likes her skin, or smell, or anything about her. She's the wierdo and outcast, and pretends that it's okay with her. Meanwhile, her town is upside down in preperation of throwing a welcome party for the original town outcast that left 15 years ago and never looked back. There are many small roles of supporting characters with their own stories of how they were left behind by Roxy Charmichael, her best friend, her first love, and Dinky thinks she's one of those left behind.
A sweet movie, a simple story line, and of course first love with a little twist.

An odd girl in a small town 4 Star Review
2008-10-16 - This is a really enjoyable movie about a misfit girl in a small town. Winona Ryder's character isn't quite right. She idolizes the only person that ever left town and became famous. Now the town is all aflutter because the famous Roxy Carmichael is coming back to visit. Probably a good date movie.

One of the BEST, A HIDDEN GEM!!!! 5 Star Review
2008-10-09 - I remember watching this movie when i was a little kid and it was always on HBO like everyday it seemed. A quick recap of the story is in a small town, one of its town's people/patron becomes a celebrity and in her hometown she is idolized. Word is that she is returning back to her hometown soon for a visit and the whole town is up in arms with excitement for her return. Through this mayhem and madness of her return an outsider who was adopted named Dinky played by Wynona Ryder believes that Roxy is her true mother. That's my cliff notes version of the film. This truly is a hidden gem and one of Wynona's best performances when she was around her late teens/early 20's. This truly is a human interest story and a good coming of age film as well. This movie just has a magical quality about it that can't be explained and for some odd reason i can watch this movie over and over again. I always related to this film because of the fact that Dinky is an outsider and it seems everyone in town looks at her as if she is some sort of monster. Only a few people really find out some of the great qualities that she has to offer. On another note the music soundtrack to this film is awesome and has beautiful songs from Melissa Etheridge on it. If you haven't check this out you should or at least rent it.

roxy carmichael come home 5 Star Review
2008-01-01 - I ordered 2 of these because both my grown children loved this movie from their past! They were very pleased. Great condition

Good Movie, Better Music 4 Star Review
2007-10-23 - The movie is pretty good. I watched it with my God daughter when she was young, since it was evident even then she would be a part of the popular crowd, and I wanted her to see that she shouldn't pick on those who aren't.

However, what I really want to review is the music in the movie. For whatever reason, the soundtrack CD doesn't include the two main songs in the movie (including the one for which Roxy is supposedly famous!). Both those songs were written and performed by Melissa Etheridge. One of them, I Will Never Be the Same, was fleshed out and added to Melissa's ground-breaking career-making album, Yes I Am. The second is a partial song entitled Don't Look At Me. She never recorded it, and this is the only place you can hear it. Both songs are used very effectively in this movie. If you are a fan of Melissa Etheridge, this movie is a must-see.
