Editorial Review:
Import pressing features 'Why' as an additional bonus track over the US version. The first and still the best of the many Carly Simon compilations available, 1975's THE BEST OF CARLY SIMON is an all-meat, no-filler collection of most of the folk-pop singer/songwriter's best and biggest songs. Looking over the track listing, one is reminded of just how many classic songs Simon was responsible for in the early '70s. "That's the Way I've Always Heard it Should Be", "The Right Thing to Do", "Haven't Got Time For the Pain", "Anticipation", and of course "You're So Vain" still sound remarkably solid. This is particularly impressive considering the amount of radio time they've all gotten in the intervening decades. Simon's husky voice and smart, piano-based arrangements don't sound nearly as dated as those of many of her contemporaries, and while THE BEST OF CARLY SIMON may qualify as a guilty pleasure in some minds, it's a pleasure nonetheless. 11 tracks. Warner.
Description of The Best of Carly Simon:
Almost any way you look at it, the Carly Simon of the '70s was pretty cool. Her acerbic wit and nasally expressive voice had people comparing her to Carole King, but there was also a weary androgyny to her that wouldn't be seen again until the arrival of Chrissy Hynde. Her songs rocked without quite being rock songs, and were folk-evocative without falling into the singer-songwriter bins. She scored multiple singles hits yet pulled off albums with the best of her contemporaries. This is an early collection, so it misses "Nobody Does It Better" and other later hits. Regardless, nearly all the songs here are worth having. Flavorful and nourishing--and a good package, besides. --Gavin McNett
The Best of Carly Simon Reviews:
"TRULY" The "VERY, VERY," BEST OF CARLY SIMON
2009-09-16 - What a "MAGIC","MAGIC" time in my life...the early 70's... we would put on our "BEST" bell bottom jeans, our "WAFFLE STOMPERS", our most "IN", shirt... and of course our "POOKA SHELLS"... Splash on the "ENGLISH LEATHER".. blow dry our hair in the mirror like John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever... It's Saturday night and we are headed for the "RATSKELLER"...the absolute best food, pool tables, did I say "GIRLS" too???..... AND THE "SWEETEST", "PURIST", most "BEAUTIFUL" sound in the "WORLD", coming out of the "WURLITZER" juke box, I've ever heard... "CARLEY SIMONS"... "LOVING YOU IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO".. man did she set the mood... the smell of "GRILLED STEAKS"... Cute girls, and it's the 70's... I lived it... I loved it... and I miss it!!! and of course.., the last song of the evening,
"WE HAVE NO SECRETS"... what passion, what power, you could feel the electricity in the air... and as the evening comes to a close.. I leave with the prettiest girl... go out and open the door of my "1967 CHEVELLE SS 396"... Turn the key..the 396 comes to life... plug in my "CARLY SIMON"in the 8-track.... and the music plays... "NOBODY DOES IT BETTER" and truly, "NOBODY" does it better than "CARLY SIMON"... because..... "WE HAVE NO SECRETS.... The 70's "ROCK"
These are the good old days!
2009-02-18 - Although I owned several of Carly Simon's LP's back when I was a young man, I seldom listened to them with the exception of this (the first) The Best of Carly Simon ( I did however look at the cover to Playing Possuman awful lot). The Amazon Editor's review says it well, "This is all meat and no filler".
Although Ms. Simon was a rich kid whom I would have had little in common, the songs always spoke to me both with her emotive vocals and her amazing lyrics that changed effortlessly from narrative verse "My father sits at night with no lights on; His cigarette glows in the dark. The living room is still; I walk by, no remark." To vivid metaphors "You say we'll soar like two birds through the clouds, but soon you'll cage me on your shelf"
"That's the way I've always heard it should be", "Anticipation", "I haven't got time for the Pain", "The Right thing to Do" are four of my favorite songs of all time. The `70s was the time I went to High School and spent my early young adult days so maybe I'm not objective, but for me that was about the best time for music of all genres' and that especially includes singer song-writer music and this is among the best of the era. Last year I had an epiphany of sorts, when in the song "Anticipation" Ms. Simon muses "these are the good old days" the obvious inference was we should live in the now and not look off to the future. My wife and I concluded that no, what she really meant was the 70s were the good old days.
But maybe that's just us!
So here's the deal,
The newer Best of Carly Simon "Reflections" Reflections: Carly Simon's Greatest Hits has a more career spanning collection, but this budget priced early collection is all good and a great buy.
Trip down memory lane
2008-10-07 - I've been waiting to buy this cd for the longest time and it was worth the wait... remembering all the old songs took me back many years when life was simpler and I was much younger...each song reminds me of a different chapter in my life..... thanks for the trip back down memory lane
Some songs overplayed so her work is underrated
2008-09-16 - One of my faves, Anticipation was used for a ketchup ad and really devalued the song. I can't listen to it now without thinking of the condiment. That has taken away from the quality of her work. Yes her tunes are catchy but the arrangements and lyrics are first rate. One of the most cynical songs is 'That's the way I've always heard it should be'. It was not a huge hit but I think it's one of her best. Her sensibility may be commercial but most of her songs are beautifully crafted. The melodies stick in your head, even if you don't want them to. Too bad she has a phobia about performing, otherwise I'd love to see a concert.
A great place to start for casual fans
