Editorial Review:
Grammy Award-winner Carly Simon is one of the most respected vocalists and songwriters in music today. This Kind of Love ranks among her most personal albums, as well as one of her most stylistically diverse excursions, with songs ranging from gorgeous melodies to driving rhythms.
This Kind of Love ranks among Simon's most personal albums as well as one of her most stylistically diverse excursions with songs ranging from gorgeous melodies to driving rhythms. The CD is co-produced by Simon, Frank Filipetti and Jimmy Webb who also wrote or co-wrote most of the arrangements. Filipetti worked his talent as the engineer as well as producer. The three first teamed up for Film Noir, Simon's album of standards that Webb produced in 1997. On This Kind of Love, Simon delivers 10 of her own songs (some of which she co-wrote), including the gently swaying title love song, the funky castigation of conniving celebrity-identity thieves ("People Say A Lot"), the catchy "How Could You Ever Forget" (one of Simon's personal favorites), the r&b-vibed "So Many People," the lyrical gem, "Sangre Dolce," and a waltz-time homage to her close friend, the humor columnist Art Buchwald, who passed in January 2007 ("Too Soon to Say Goodbye").
This Kind of Love Reviews:
Carly songs at last!
2009-12-20 - Aside from her work on two Disney films, This Kind Of Love marks the first original songs from Carly in 8 long, long years. The world is always a better place with new Carly Simon songs to sing and listen to.
There's a whole lot of fun with the Brazilian grooves sprinkled throughout the album..but don't let those delicate, sexy rhythms lull you too much...Carly's lyrics are as poignant and thought provoking as ever. She delves in to some surprising, touching, and uncomfortable topics while her music soothes the soul as usual.
But Carly has always done that; mixing wonderful, catchy grooves with lyrics that make you think and feel and laugh and cry.
Standouts: So Many People To Love, In My Dreams, How Can You Forget, and a song for our beloved pets, THEY JUST WANT YOU TO BE THERE.
This is just bad
2009-10-12 - I'm sorry but this is just bad, hearing her voice I kept waiting for something to click, but it sounds so forced.
Dreadful Nightmare
2009-04-09 - Let's start by saying that I am a Carly Simon fan and have collected all of her recordings. Carly has had ups and downs in her, mostly respectable, recording career. But then she released "This Kind Of Love". What a dreadful collection of music...the words nightmare, awful and unpleasant come to mind. Save your money, do not buy this stinker! Let's pretend it never happened!
Disappointing CD
2009-03-22 - I am a huge Carly Simon fan, as well as a fan of Brasilian music, particularly Jazz Samba. When I saw that Carly Simon had released a CD that included Brasilian music, I eagerly anticipated its arrival, despite several reviews that suggested she had lost her voice. I think she peaked in around 1990, with the terrific "Have You Seen Me Lately," but I've enjoyed recent recordings such as the 2000 "Bedroom Tapes" and her 2005 "Moonlight Serenade." That said, I found "This Kind of Love" to lack any quality songs -- her rap is cloying and background vocals intrude virtually every time she reaches a high note. I'm not storing this CD with her others in my collection; I'd rather forget I bought it.
Great.....Except for the Rap Number
2009-02-13 - Outstanding album. Lyrics touching and go right to the heart, especially those songs that are obviously dedicated to her kids. The "rap" song is not my favorite, but it certainly puts a new twist on Carly.....
