Description of Epic Movie (Unrated Edition):

By dint of the inexplicable popularity of their send-up of movie genres in the parody movies Scary Movie and Date Movie, writer/director duo Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer probably got an epic-sized bucket of cash for this hastily stitched pastiche of drive-by entertainment. There's no particular variety of movie they were sent to send up this time, unless big box-office grossers has now become a genre in and of itself. If so, Epic Movie may well qualify as part of that league itself. Very little expense has been spared to make so-called "comic" references to a slew of mostly recent blockbusters--The Chronicles of Narnia, Borat, Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the X-Men and Harry Potter series, Superman Returns, Nacho Libre, and The Da Vinci Code to name a few--and it's assumed we've seen them all. In a goofy thread of a story about four orphans plucked from some of the above, battle must be done through various bastardized plots from same so that a prophecy can be fulfilled and they can assume their rightful place as rulers of a sacred land. Lots of crotch kicks, fart, urine, and vomit jokes speed by as we pass through Willie Wonka's factory and a magical wardrobe with an unusually interesting assortment of look-alikes and name actors caught up in the gag mix (some of it legitimately funny). Darrell Hammond, Crispin Glover, David Carradine, Kevin McDonald, Carmen Electra, Kal Penn put on game (and sometimes gamy) faces, and it's definitely a hoot to watch comedy improv alums Fred Willard and Jennifer Coolidge as Aslo the Lion and the White Bitch do battle in a Narnian good vs. evil character smackdown. As lame as you already expect a movie like this to be, anything that can throw together an homage to C.S. Lewis alongside MTV's Punk'd in less than 90 minutes can't be all bad. --Ted Fry

    Epic Movie (Unrated Edition) Reviews:
Another Hilarious Spoof!!! 5 Star Review
2008-07-12 - Like I've said before, you need a great sense of humor to appreciate these types of movies! This movie is very funny! It makes fun of Willy Wonka, Chronicles of Narnia, Da Vinci Code, Snakes on a Plane, Borat, etc. If you love spoofs, you'll love EPIC MOVIE!!!

Junk food for the brain 2 Star Review
2008-06-13 - I don't normally watch these type of movies, but my curiosity got the best of me and I popped this into the DVD player this evening. The movie would not be at all funny unless you've seen Nacho Libre, Narnia, Snakes on a Plane, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, X-Men, Pirates of the Caribbean, and The DaVinci Code, among others. Fortunately I have seen most of these movies so the parodies were not lost on me.

The sets and acting was mediocre, and the movie progressed quickly from one parody to another, and I actually did find myself laughing through a lot of the movie, but once it was over I kind of felt like I had just ingested junk food for the brain.

What did my husband think? He headed off to bed half way through, and he actually tends to enjoy comedies. Young people, especially those who enjoy comedies and have seen the above movies will probably find this movie to be moderately funny. I'm just glad I didn't waste my money at the theater on this one.

Couple hits, a lot of misses 2 Star Review
2008-05-31 - Yea, this movie isn't great. It could have been funny, but it's just kind of lacking. The parts of the movies they decide to make fun of, just seem kind of uninspired. For example, they make fun of the Harry Potter gang's age. Huh? He's maybe 2 years older he's supposed to be... why not the fact that an elderly man looks over a house full of young children? Or the length of his wand? Or soooomething. But sticking a bunch of old actors in the spots...puhlease.

Captain Jack isn't bad. Well, it's at least a fairly good copy of the real character, but they didn't really do anything from the movie. He could have had some funny parts...

It's willy, it's willy, it's willy, willy awful. 1 Star Review
2008-05-15 - This movie is about four adult orphans: Peter the Heroic, Susan the Just, Edward the Loyal, and Lucy the Dumb S**t. The movie begins with Lucy (Jayma Mays) in a spoof of The Da Vinci Code The Da Vinci Code (Widescreen Two-Disc Special Edition) finding her golden ticket. It then moves to Edward (Kal Penn) in a spoof of Nacho Libre Nacho Libre (Special Collector's Edition) getting his golden ticket. We then move to Susan (Faune A. Chambers) in her spoof of Snakes on a plane Snakes on a Plane (Full Screen Edition) acquiring her golden ticket. Finally we meet Peter (Adam Campbell) in his spoof of X-Men X-Men (Widescreen Edition).

With the four golden tickets in hand, the orphans begin their adventure at ... you guessed it! A spoof of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Widescreen Edition) The story goes from there to spoof The Chronicles of Narnia, Superman Returns, Harry Potter, and Pirates of the Caribbean ... Among others. Throughtout the movie, you'll chuckle at a few jokes here and there, but nothing that'll make milk pour from your nose. Epic Movie falls right in line with all the other spoof movies - a few well placed jokes, some poor spoofing, and bad acting. Would I recommend it? If you like these types of movies, I would. If not, I'd skip it.

If you believed this, you must be joking. Go ahead and give me unhelpful votes for all I care, it still doesn't change the fact that this movie is neither epic nor funny. I'm gonna go watch Spaceballs, hope to see you two at the McDonalds counter, Jason and Aaron! :)
