Editorial Review:
In 1969, Karen and Richard Carpenter signed to A&M Records and released their debut album. Forty years later, the Carpenters are recognized not only as the most successful brother-sister act in music history and one of the best-selling acts of all-time but also as a pop culture phenomenon that continues to resonate today. Celebrating that legacy, the two-CD 40/40 (A&M/UMe), released October 20, 2009, produced by Richard Carpenter, brings together 40 of the duo's greatest hits and best-loved recordings, each digitally remastered.
40/40 includes all of the Carpenters' dozen Top 10 Pop hits, 19 of their 20 Top 40s and 23 of their 28 Top 75 Pop singles, from 1969's cover of the Beatles' "Ticket To Ride" to 1981's "Those Good Old Dreams." Among the 17 other tracks are covers of Leon Russell's classic "This Masquerade," Hank Williams' "Jambalaya (On The Bayou)" and Tim Hardin's "Reason To Believe," and a pair of recordings originally released in 1983, following Karen's passing earlier that year, "Now" and "Your Baby Doesn't Love You Anymore."
40/40 Reviews:
This Golden voice was taken from us...
2009-12-11 - What I like about this set is that it includes some of the lesser known gems in their careers where her hunger, and yes, some of her crudeness shows through. Seeing her progress from "Let Me Be The One", to the range and control of "Only Yesterday", "I Need To Be In Love", and "Goodbye To Love" is truly awe-inspring. And, of course, the most under-rated song of theirs in my opinion of "Touch Me When We're Dancing". Overshadowed, of course, is Richard who did most of the arranging, song selection, and some writiing. His "wall of sound" techniques work perfectly with Karen and together they made some of the most beautiful, timeless music ever. Had she lived, I believe she would have been considered one of the greatest vocalists we've ever produced. Right there with Billie, Ella, Aretha, Barbara, and Whitney. The fact that I don't have to give their last names shows what I'm talking about.
Always pleased with Amazon
2009-12-08 - Ordered this CD for my mother who is a big Carpenters fan. Order came fast and my mother loves the 40/40 CD!

Richard does it again....
2009-12-02 - Once again Richard Carpenter has put together a tasteful, loving collection of his and Karen's music.
Well worth a listen!
Another Wonderful Compilation...but...
2009-11-22 - Carpenters 40/40 is overall a fine retrospective of the Carpenters music catalog. This one has several tracks never before on such a compilation, most notably the beautiful "When You've Got What it Takes", an outstanding song from the "Made In America" album of 1981. This set showcases the impeccable vocal stylings of Karen Carpenter, one of the finest pop singers in American music history. The sound and mastering are wonderful, though I would dearly love to hear some of the tracks as they originally were on the original albums of years ago. And I do wonder why Richard, who has control of their music catalog, has not yet seen fit to let the fans hear and own the unreleased tracks from Karen's solo album. I would also have liked to see a more detailed booklet with more photos and some more personal reflections from Richard. Still, it is great to see that new compilations are being brought out to keep the Carpenters' legacy alive. For anyone interested in their music, this is a worthy release and should not be missed.
