Hipper now than they ever were in their day, Karen and Richard Carpenter achieved a rare feat: They saw one of their songs become a holiday classic. "Merry Christmas, Darling" sold like mad in the late 1970s and cemented the identity of the song with the band. In the wake of Karen's death, the lyrics became even more poignant, but isn't a good tug on the heartstrings what a lot of holiday songs are all about? The Carpenters' tender cover of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" is equally touching, their lush vocals layered like warm blankets on a cold December night. Though Christmas Portrait is harshly abbreviated, this version--the Special Edition--features almost 40 songs, including goose-bump giving versions of "Ave Maria" and "O Holy Night" and is definitely the better disc of the two. --Steve Gdula

Best Christmas Album Of All Time 
2009-12-25 - The finest Christmas album ever produced. Flawless, perfect, Karen Carpenter the best female vocalist that ever lived...... period. This album is fantastic, if you dont own it...get it. The Carpenters produced the finest Christmas music of all time. The album is flawless, perfect in every way, like listenting to music in heaven. Many albums have great songs but every song on this album is flawless....a true musical masterpice in typical Carpenters fashion. A must have album in any Christmas collection.
Not like the original 
2009-12-18 - I just bought this album to replace the original I had. I am unhappy with it because it is all chopped up. Most of the first tracks are not the Carpenters but medleys from some unkown orchraster. The album just is a mish mash of bits and pieces with some Carpenter originals thrown in to get you to buy it. You are not getting what the cover picture suggests, the original Carpenter's Christmas Portrait.
Not the original album 
2009-12-01 - If you are looking for the original Carpenters Christmas Portrait album, this isn't it.
As noted in a number of other reviews here, this is a combination of the original Christmas Portrait album along with An Old Fashioned Christmas.
Four tracks from the original album are not present on this CD:
* O Come O Come Emmanuel
* Overture (Christmas Portrait)
* Jingle Bells
* The First Snowfall / Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow
The remaining 13 tracks from the original album are combined with 8 tracks from An Old Fashioned Christmas, an LP that was released at about the same time as this CD (and after Karen's passing). Those tracks are mainly orchestral and choral, with some singing by Richard Carpenter. Many people will like the mixture, but it's definitely not the original album.
Karen Carpenter does not appear until 11 minutes into this CD.
If you want the original album on CD, you'll have to buy it in a 2-CD set along with An Old Fashioned Christmas: Christmas Collection.

2009-09-07 - Bought this as a Christmas present for my Mother. It arrived quickly and in the condition the seller described. Looking forward to hearing about this when she opens it and plays it!
A Classic CD!
2009-06-26 - I got this CD for each of my nieces and nephews, as well as my children...it was my father's favorite Christmas CD...he loved the Carpenters! Sadly he passed away several years ago, so I wanted each of them to own this CD and think of him each Christmas when they get out their Christmas CDs to play! They loved the gift!
