Description of Liar Liar:
Recovering from the box-office disappointment of The Cable Guy, Jim Carrey gave his fans what they wanted in this good-natured and frequently hilarious 1997 comedy. In a vehicle tailor-made for his verbal and physical antics, Carrey plays a lawyer whose penchant for prevarication is tested when his son makes a birthday wish that his father would tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth for 24 hours, so help him God! Without his daily defense of white lies, selfish fibs, and outright deception, the helpless lawyer finds himself blurting uncensored truths with total, and totally outrageous, candor. The script is clever enough to milk the premise for all it's worth, but it's Carrey's energy--particularly in a hilarious bathroom scene where he literally mugs himself to delay a trial--that keeps the movie going to its sappy happy ending. The supporting cast includes Jennifer Tilly, Cary Elwes, and Amanda Donohoe. --Jeff Shannon
Liar Liar Reviews:
Silly, silly fun.
2008-07-27 - Liar Liar starring Jim Carrey was another hit for the mega star. His pyshical comedy is evident in this comedy, he just knows how to work his face and body. This film isn't perfect but it's fun and harmless. Enjoy!
Liar Liar Pants On Fire!
2008-04-11 - This review is for the HD DVD version:
Liar Liar is my favorite Jim Carrey film, sure his other films are funny but this is a mature comedy for adults.Jim Carrey is a genius at physical comedy and this film shows off his talent. My favorite scene is where Samantha introduces Jim Carrey to the firm's board of directors,I still bust a gut when he slaps the toupe on the wall.
The picture quality on the HD DVD is slightly grainy but the color and contrast are excellent. The HD DVD also has lots of extras and hilarious outtakes.Universal added a nifty screensaver when you pause so you plasma owners don't have to worry about burn-in,Universal also added a bookmark feature which allows you to go back to your favorite scenes.
Still Fun To Watch!
2008-02-25 - Like Dumb and Dumber, this movie is still funny and fun to watch. While not as masterful as Dumb and Dumber, Liar Liar is a great comedy to own. I popped this in because my 5 year old daughter LOVES Bruce Almighty, so we have been going through the Jim Carrey classics. He is her favorite actor and I can't blame her. The guy is a riot! I think it's great that I can now enjoy Jim Carrey movies with my child and we are both highly entertained. Now I'd just like to see him get back to the over the top antics and silly comedies that we all love him for.
Jim Carrey's last great comedy
2007-12-23 - Fletcher Reed (Jim Carrey) is a lawyer trying to hustle his way into a partnership at the firm he works at. His slick talking, egocentric ways have already cost him his marriage and is hurting his son, Max, as he breaks promise after promise to the boy. And then Max makes a birthday wish that his dad can't tell a lie for one full day... and it comes true. Faced with a court case that can only be won by pitching a fantastic story he had concocted, Fletcher is horrified to learn that he can only give brutally honest answers to any question posed. Not surprisingly, Fletcher's day of honesty does little to endear him with just about anyone but it does force him to confront some brutal truths about himself.
The humor in this movie is vintage Jim Carrey, but operates at a more mature level than we saw in his earlier movies such as Ace Ventura: Pet Detective or Dumb and Dumber. There is still plenty of face twisting and physical comedy, but he also interacts at a very human level with his son and ex-wife making him a far more substantial character. The supporting cast is strong across the board. Justin Cooper is unusually good for his tender age as the son. Jennifer Tilly is perfect as the adulterous shrew that Fletcher must help to win her divorce case if he wants to make partner. I won't go through the entire cast, but all of them fill their roles as if born to them.
Liar Liar is a great comedy, perhaps the last great one Jim Carrey will ever make. In the ten years that have passed since the film's release, he has made few comedies and almost all of his movies in that time have been lackluster. Watching this movie is a chance to see a master comedian at the top of his game. One final tip, make sure to keep watching when the credits start to see some hilarious outtakes.
Funny movie
2007-12-17 - Funny movie as usual from Jim Carrey. Just what a person needs, a good laugh.
