Freebird The Movie: Music From The Motion Picture Reviews:
LYNYRYD SKYNYRD "Freebird the Movie" Soundtrack CD 5 Star Review
2008-11-07 - OUTSTANDING!!! THIS IS THE SOUNDTRACK TO THE LYNYRD SKYNYRD MOVIE "FREEBIRD" AND IS AN EXCELLENT COMPANION TO THE MOVIE. IT PROOVES THAT SKYNYRD WAS (AND IS) AN EXCELLENT "LIVE" BAND. THE CD CONSISTS OF 14 SONGS ALL PERFORMED LIVE (MOST AT THE KNEBWORTH FESTIVAL IN ENGLAND DURING 1976). "FREEBIRD" THE SONG WAS RECORDED AT BILL GRAHAM'S "A DAY ON THE GREEN" IN OAKLAND, CA.

THIS IS "PRE-PLANE CRASH" LYNYRD SKYNYRD PERFORMING AT THEIR VERY BEST "lIVE". YOU GET THE LINE-UP OF RONNIE, GARY, ALLEN, STEVE, BILLY,LEON, AND ARTIMUS AND THE ORIGINAL HONKETTES: LESLEY HAWKINS, JO JO BILLINGSLY, AND CASSIE GAINES!!!

YOU GET AN OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE OF "T FOR TEXAS" PREFORMED LIVE AT THE OUTDOOR KNEBWORTH FESTIVAL. RONNIE INTRODUCES THE SONG AS A SONG WRITTEN BY JIMMIE ROGERS BACK IN THE 1920'S. THE BAND REALLY JAMS ON THIS ONE, IT CONTAINS EXCELLENT GUITAR WORK IN IT AND IS NEARLY 10 MINUTES LONG.

THE ENTIRE CD IS EXCELLENT FROM BEGINNING TO END, BUT ONE THING THAT STOOD OUT FOR ME WAS DURING THE PERFORMANCE OF "FREEBIRD" DURING THE EARLY EASY GUITAR PART, RONNIE TELLS GARY TO PLAY THIS ONE FOR BERRY (BERRY OAKLEY OF THE EARLY ALLMAN BROTHERS WHO WAS KILLED IN A MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT JUST LIKE DUANE ALLMAN).

THIS IS A GREAT ONE FOLKS!!! AND I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!!!

A great, tough live album 5 Star Review
2008-05-05 - This soundtrack is really a live album, and a great one at that. Thirteen of these fourteen songs were recorded on August 21, 1976, during Lynyrd Skynyrd's appearance at Knebworth House, and while I don't think it's a better live album than "One More From The Road", it is certainly just as good.
The band sounds tight, but very loud, very brash, and very gritty, significantly more so than on their studio recordings. The opening performance of "Workin' for MCA" grinds and swaggers like you won't believe, and it's followed by equally powerful renditions of "I Ain't The One", "Whiskey Rock-a-Roller", and the thumping riff-rocker "Saturday Night Special" with its not very redneck-like anti-gun-sentiments.

The sound quality is very good, just fuzzy enough for this to sound like an authentic concert recording, and Ronnie van Zant is magnificent.
So, for that matter, are guitarists Gary Rossington, Steve Gaines and Allen Collins. "Searching" is normally one of my least favorite Skynyrd numbers, but even that one really smokes. And it's all due to the amazing power and cohesion of the entire band...they just click, locking into the groove like a train going down the track (or some other tired cliché).

Most of these songs were on "One More From The Road", but "That Smell", and "What's Your Name" made their live debut here. It's not the greatest "That Smell" ever, but it's good, and it's followed by a high-octane "Gimme Three Steps" which pretty much just epitomizes Southern rock n' roll! And the boyz do a fun, up-tempo rock n' roll-ish take on Jimmie Rodgers' ancient "T For Texas (Blue Yodel #1)".

The sound quality is good, it's not ice-pick sharp, but all the more authentic and "live" sounding for it.
I don't love the elongated guitar break on "Free Bird"...such a bunch of great guitarists should've been able to come up with something better than a couple of minutes of triads. But that's pretty much all I have to complain about. Great, great renditions of most of Skynyrd's best songs, including a hard-hitting "Sweet Home Alabama", a tremendous live "feel", and a band at the very top of their game. It's not Bob Dylan (I love Bob Dylan), but it's great nonetheless.
Very highly recommended!

Like listening to the movie in your car 5 Star Review
2008-03-07 - Well, I got Freebird the Movie for my birthday. The DAY I watched it, I went and ordered Freebird the CD. The inclusion of That Smell and What's Your Name live is simply incredible. Plus, Knebworth was one of Skynyrd's most inspired moments (who says England is better than the US musically?). Missing from this CD are Gimme Back My Bullets and Cry For the Bad Man, most likely since those were both already released on the re-issue of Gimme Back My Bullets. If you are a Skynyrd fan, this is really the second live CD you can get. Order it today!

Terrible Sound Quality 2 Star Review
2005-12-04 - Freebird The Movie is a great movie to watch. However the sound quality on this CD is just horrible. There is no stereo separation at all between the instruments. Whoever put this on CD obviously didn't take much time to mix it. If you're a Skynyrd fan, the only reason you should buy this CD is to have live versions of That Smell and What's Your Name. The rest of the songs are available on One More From The Road and have pretty much the same arrangements with much better sound quality.

"Freebirds" fly on... 5 Star Review
2005-10-25 - For anyone that is just getting into Lynyrd Skynyrd, or for the established fans, this CD is a must have. It shows just how powerful and majestic they were as a live band prior to their October 1977 plane crash. This was recorded at the Knebworth festival in England, 1976. By all accounts, Skynyrd stole the show from headliners Rolling Stones. Ronnie VanZant was the heart of Skynyrd. Vocalist, lyricist, and band leader, Ronnie was a country singer fronting a rock band. Gary Rossington and Allen Collins were masters of their instruments, and with the recent addition of Steve Gaines (stepping in to take the vacated spot of Ed King) on guitar, solidified their reputation as the "three guitar army." Leon Wilkenson was one of the most creative bass players ever, and Artimus Pyle on drums provided the strong and steady beat to this soundtrack. Billy Powell rounds out the sound with his touch on the keyboards, from the beautifully melodic "Freebird" (recorded in July 1977 in Oakland) to some excellent barroom boogie on "Whiskey Rock-a-roller." As far as some of the other "live" albums put out by various artists (most are doctored in the studio with crowd noise mixed in) this is a legitimate live album. I would also recommend getting the "Freebird" DVD to see just what I am talking about. This is a band whose career was cut far too short. It is a shame that they have yet to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as this was a band that was made up of solid musicians. A must have!!!!
