Editorial Review:
One of Cat Power's most beloved records, containing her unique take on songs by The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Michael Hurley, The Velvet Underground, Bill Callahan, and others. Contains "Sea Of Love" as heard in the film "Juno", and in a prominent Met Life ad, "I Found A Reason" as heard in the film "V For Vendetta," and "Satisfaction", one of her most beloved covers. Pressed on 180 gram HQ virgin vinyl.

Description of The Covers Record:
Chan Marshall devised the Cat Power moniker in order to put a degree of separation between herself and the often-twisted individuals who inhabit her songs. Here, she takes another step back while also taking a step forward. As the album title indicates, these are covers of other people's songs. Yet she sings them with no less intensity than if they were her own. Mick Jagger may have snarled the definitive "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," but Marshall takes a different tack. She removes the chorus and returns it as elegant slow blues. The Velvet Underground's "I Found a Reason" becomes a near-wordless cry. She relies only on her sufficient guitar picking and likeably amateurish piano tinkling, creating an isolated web not unlike that of Neil Young at his most deserted. Most appropriately, she covers "Red Apples" by Smog, whom she resembles in approach. Obscure (traditional and early) Bob Dylan, Nina Simone, and Michael Hurley tunes complement the bruised but not buried surroundings. --Rob O'Connor

The Covers Record Reviews:
A Melancholy Minimalist Sings From The Soul 4 Star Review
2009-10-27 - This is my first experience with Cat Power, and I must say it was a pleasure to listen to something so original, even when it wasn't original material. Chan has taken a fairly disparate collection of songs and created a very unique interpretation of other people's music, forming a surprisingly cohesive whole. She goes far beyond simply putting her own stamp on these covers; she recreates them, giving them an entirely new emotional depth in some instances. Her vocal style really captures an inner melancholy and perhaps a kind of longing without sounding contrived (at least, that's what I got out of it). Her "minimalist" style, as some call it, is only minimalist in that it is subtle and not overpowering. I really enjoy her whispery, slightly raspy vocal quality. Obviously instrumentalism isn't a priority in this album, which some reviewers seem to be cranky about. But it didn't bother me at all. The sparse guitar and piano is simply meant as an unobtrusive backdrop to her singing. Some of the tracks are stronger than others, but all are worth listening to. "I Found a Reason" is particularly touching and uplifting. Her rendition of "Wild Is The Wind" is also very moving. Music snobs may not like Cat Power, but I consider myself somewhat of a connoisseur (I enjoy everything from classical to heavy metal, electronica to folk), and this album was a delight.

Quite the "kitty" that Cat!!! 5 Star Review
2009-02-24 - I enjoy this CD very much, she does a great job on the Rolling Stones cover song, I like all the album very much, "smoky" voice, smooth. Would buy something else by her.

Another mostly lobotomized set 2 Star Review
2008-08-11 - 2 1/2

Another year, another ho-hum-drum offering from the nominally talented songwriter. As with most releases, the vast bulk bores away with monotonous instrumentation masquerading as minimalism, except this time we witness her interpretations of certain cover songs. When she holds back enough out of respect it often works best, but her choices are bland- Sea of Love almost works before it becomes tediously repetitious like most of 'em. One upside: the closest thing to Cat's puurfect song- an atypically self-less and fleshed out "I Found A Reason".

first Catpower CD purchase 3 Star Review
2008-06-23 - This is my first purchase of a Catpower CD. I choose this one given its good reviews. In general, I like the CD. It is extremely mellow and, overall, the songs sound nothing like the origials. I recommend listening to the song samples if you are unsure about purchasing the CD.

Cat Powers Covers 3 Star Review
2008-06-04 - There are one or two really good cuts, notably, Satisaction. The rest of the CD seems dreary and repetitive. She does have an amazing voice, however. I'd say, just buy the cuts you like.
