Editorial Review:
If veteran Cat Stevens fans were nervous in the wake of the previous album's (Foreigner) sometimes sketchy experimentalism, they must surely have been gratified by the singer-songwriter's return to form here. Reuniting with producer Paul Samwell-Smith, this 1974 collection kicks off with the bracing "Music" and never looks back, managing to be both more adventurous and focused than its predecessor. Though perhaps belied by the preciousness of the hit "Oh, Very Young," there's a muscular determination to songs like "Sun/C79" and "Ready" that serves Stevens well. Lyrically, tracks like "Jesus," "King of Trees," and "Home in the Sky" give early hints of Stevens's spiritual quest, though delivered through Samwell-Smith's eclectic, if still pop-focused production. Even to jaded ears, the album still sounds fresh in 2000 and may well sound like Cat Stevens's best work. --Jerry McCulley

Buddha And The Chocolate Box Reviews:
Majik Cat at his near best 1 Star Review
2009-12-13 - This is a pleasing Cat Stevens album although, admittedly not one of his best.

If you are a die hard fan, you will enjoy it all.

If you are a fan, you will enjoy most of it.

If you just want to hear some Cat then go for Teaser and the Firecat, Tea for the Tillerman or Catch Bull at Four. Even Mona Bone Jackon is better than this.

I like it to enjoy it and I am a rather die hard fan.

Buddah and the Chocolate Box 3 Star Review
2009-03-20 - Bought the Buddah CD to add to my Cat Stevens collection. Good Music for nostalgia and general upbeat listening.

Buddha And The Chocolate Box 4 Star Review
2008-10-29 - Thank you - Buddha And The Chocolate Box safely received in good condition. Lovely to hear it again.

Michael Haley's notes on "Buddha and the Chocolate Box" 5 Star Review
2008-09-28 - It is hard to believe that one would not think this is Cat Stevens' best album. It is his finest. (tea for the tillerman is close) Inspirationally it is Stevens at his apex. Mr. Stevens understood here that brevity and succinctness was or is the better part of valor in recording. Nine luscious and ravishing songs to lift the spirit. I think Mr. Stevens also understood that a discerning combination of upbeat tunes (especially "Ready" and "C/79") along with his more calm characteristic melodic ones can be vital to an album's power. Listen to this album for the first time and you will not be able to let it rest for a long while. It is that affecting. Stevens' album teaser and the firecat, for example, has more "hits": Ironically, that is exactly why it does not stand the test of time as well as "Buddha" does. It is incomprehensible how underrated this album is. If one believes in a more cooperative human purpose; if ones loves pop music's art at its highest exhilarating level; and if one wishes to dance even, "Buddha and the Chocolate Box" is irresistible.

Another good Cat album.. 4 Star Review
2008-06-09 - So Cat Stevens was never quite the same after Foreigner, but this was an attempt to return to the old-school styles that he started with. It is still good as are all of his albums, but not the greatest.

I recommend this to Cat (Yusef) fans, but also if you just like some easy-listening folk music.
