In the mid-90s dublin was nothing short of a war zone with a few powerful drug lords battling for control. Their most fearsome opponent was not the police but the courageous journalist veronica guerin who covered the crime beat with unmatched intensity. Based on a true story. Description of Veronica Guerin:
Ireland's most beloved and tragic contemporary hero/martyr gets the Hollywood treatment in the fact-based thriller Veronica Guerin, an average film made recommendable for a fine performance by Cate Blanchett in the title role. The life, work, and assassination of the slain Irish journalist is respectfully chronicled in this gritty, streetwise biopic by director Joel Schumacher, beginning with her 1996 murder (by Irish gangsters) and flashing back to her diligent efforts, begun in 1994, to expose the drug trade that plagued Ireland for most of the decade. Blanchett is flawless in a role that combines passion, courage, and recklessness in a way that doesn't sugar-coat Guerin's character or imbue her with artificial heroics. Unfortunately, Schumacher (who makes room for an unbilled Colin Farrell cameo) and a naggingly unsophisticated screenplay turn Guerin's complex story into a conventionally accessible thriller that sometimes seems too good to be true, which is ironic given that Guerin's story was fictionalized in the marginally better 2000 film When the Sky Falls, starring Joan Allen. Recommendable for Blanchett's performance and two memorably villainous roles for Ciarán Hinds and Gerald McSorley, Veronica Guerin is an adequate tribute that could and should have been exceptional. --Jeff Shannon

    Veronica Guerin Reviews:
    Intriguing Drama 3 Star Review
2009-11-17 - This movie is based on an amazing true story. After I bought it, I realized it wasn't the unrated version, which gives a more intense message about Veronica Guerin's plight....and more offerings from Colin Farrell! In this version, he basically makes what I would call a cameo appearance. In the unrated version he is a vital informant, if you will, and this version is really missing a key element of how the story unfolds. I will buy the unrated version for sure.

a modern martyr to the drug problem in Ireland 4 Star Review
2009-10-26 - Drugs and thugs plague modern Irish cities and endanger children.
A crime fighting reporter goes after finding the big man
hidden behind the scenes and when she finds him, he beats her
up threatens her and then tries to buy her off.
They make her life a hard place,
yet she keeps at it. Her driving record of parking and speeding tickets
in the end puts her in the known place at the known time.
In the US the media is controlled by a few, so that people like her
are not heard even if they want to be?
That the Irish press is free and the US press isn't becomes plain,
because we aren't allowed such martyrs that are found in Mexico and Ireland?

3.5 stars out of 4 4 Star Review
    2008-12-18 - The Bottom Line:

A well-made biopic that charts the inevitable death of a woman who skirts closer and closer to danger, Veronica Guerin delivers several fine performances and a moving finale.

A moving and gripping film 5 Star Review
2008-11-04 - I thought this was a brilliant film, very moving and non-sensational. The performance Cate Blanchett gives is outstanding, and the film tells the story of a brave journalist very well. I also thought it covered a lot of interesting issues and I would strongly recommend it.

Veronica Guerin too EXCELLENT to NOT watch! 5 Star Review
2008-10-03 - I've read about Veronica Guerin and some of what she did to pull Dublin out of the gutter at a serious cost. I was not disappointed in the filmed version of her story. Not expecting a tear-jerker, so the flow of tears at the end was a sad suprise. For people who have an ancesterial link to Northern Ireland/Ireland, this is a must watch. For everyone else, don't miss this wonderful, yet so tragic, true tale of drug society under the unforgiving lights of scrutiny!
