The "Darling Buds of May" is a 1991 TV series about a quite unconventional and flamboyant family in rural England in the 1950s.
While each episode is unique and fun to watch and actually picked up the series to see the early works of Catherine Zeta-Jones playing the part of Mariette the voluptuous daughter in the family. Little did I know that I would fall in love with all the characters.
I came to this series originally after watching "The Mating Game" starring Debbie Reynolds, Tony Randall, Paul Douglas, and Fred Clark, which is more of a PG comedy based on the same characters based on first book of "The Darling buds of May" written by H.E. BATES; which was written and set in 1958.
Series 1

4."Christmas Is Coming" (22 December 1991)
Series 2
1. "Oh, To Be In England!" (26 January & 2 February 1992)5. Stranger at the Gates

Purfec! 2009-05-21 - This is such a wonderful series! Excellent family viewing and fun. I would recommend it to all and sundry!
ANOTHER FUN BRITISH ADAPTATION OF H.E. BATES' NOVELS 2009-02-06 - Pop Larkin (David Jason) makes this series work. His appearance with unmatched length of sideburns demonstrates the whimsical quality of the character you'll learn to love. Pop is a wheeler-dealer, a junk man one day, the head of a flea-market family always. You'll find yourself repeating his favorite expression, "Perfick", after the first disc. Pop always ends up on his feet, regardless of what he gets involved in.
Pop is a master of moral mutation. He is a warmhearted man that serves as Pop and counselor to everyone he meets--especially the ladies. He seems the "Perfick" husband and father, when not out stealing kisses from the neighborhood ladies. Pa and Ma love their drinks. Pop Larkin puts the belly-laugh into dysfunctional family behavior. And, as Pop would say, "Abso-bloomin-lutely" worth your time.
The series is noted for launching Catherine Zeta-Jones into stardom. She plays Mariette, oldest of Pop's daughters, and the 'darling' of the Larkin family. She reminds me of Annette from the Disney family history. Always lovely, gracious, sexy, unspoiled, yet wise. A queen. A 10. Catherine Zeta-Jones pulls off unprecedented notoriety and charm regardless of this whacky farm sit-com.
You will want to know that the final disc holds two December specials that need to be viewed earlier. "Christmas is Coming" actually was first presented in 1991 (in the middle of the second disc. The special, "Le Grand Weekend" from December 1992 fits in at the end of disc #3. Aside from that, the worst thing about "The Darling Buds of May" is the fact that it ended with Season 3, in April of 1993. Only 17 hours!
This set is recommended buying. It's "abso-bloomin'-lutely perfick!"
Darling Buds of May 2008-07-15 - The Darling Buds of May is a great series. Very funny, and the actors are excellent.
Want to live with the Larkins! 2008-03-07 - I loved the series. I find that Pop and Ma Larkin are big-hearted farm folk, who thoroughly advocate enjoying life to its fullest (food, drink, family and friends) while looking after and helping those in trouble or out of touch with their own soul. They may live on the fringe of the law, but their hearts are always full of morality. I dearly love this series and grieve that there as so few episodes.
