Editorial Review:
Recruited to join a top-secret mission for the Air Force, a renegade pilot (Sheen) finds himself coping with an incompetent admiral (Bridges) and a carefully-selected squadron of flyers who are either inept or half-blind. He also winds up in competition with the corps' model of military perfection (Elwes) for the heart of the base's sultry psychiatrist (Golino)
Description of Hot Shots!:
The gang that created Airplane and The Naked Gun sets its sights on Top Gun in this often hilarious spoof starring Charlie Sheen, who previously only inspired laughs with his personal life. He plays Topper Harley, a fighter pilot with an ax to grind: clearing the family name. He gets involved in a relationship with Valerie Golino, a woman with an unusually talented stomach. But his mission is to avenge his father. Lloyd Bridges, late in his career, revealed an aptitude for this kind of silliness, here as a commander who is both incredibly dim and delightfully accident prone. Directed by Jim Abrahams, the film makes fun of a variety of other films as well, from Dances with Wolves to The Fabulous Baker Boys. It was so successful that they all returned in the sequel, Hot Shots! Part Deux. --Marshall Fine
Hot Shots! Reviews:
Hot Shots
2009-06-07 - Just sit back and enjoy. We can all use a good laugh. I for one will take anything that can make me smile these days and this one did that.
Movies and books are my vacation this year. I will watch anything that Charley Sheen is in. He's easy on the eyes too.
"I even have my Father's Eyes"
2009-04-08 - LOL. This movie rocks. part deux is just as good. It is just a silly stupid type movie.. If you don't like stupid funny don't bother watching. This movie is wicked sick!
awful awful awful
2009-01-30 - This is at least one of the top 5 worst movies I've ever seen. My parents brought it over, and it's the first time I've fallen asleep while they were here in a long time. When I got up my mom yelled at me, because she said I made her stay up and watch that freaky gory dentist movie (The Dentist 2) one time. This movie is supposed to be a comedy and I didn't laugh once. Charlie Sheen is a jackass. I hope his house catches on fire. Jackass #2 from that awful show Two and a Half Man is also in this movie. This piece of crap is selling on amazon for $0.01 and that is way overpriced if you ask me. The best is people left comments like "extremely funny" and "what more could you want?" what more I could want is a knife in my penis head instead of ever having to watch just 15 minutes of this again. It even made my dreams suck. I don't remember what I dreamed, but I woke up with a lot of self doubt.
Hot Shots classic movie DVD
2008-09-07 - This classic comedy is so much fun it should be illegal as a controlled substance. Dropping a bomb on Saddam Hussein's crotch?!? Now THAT is downright hostile but also laugh-out-loud funny. Sheen's comic timing is great, and so is that of dotty old Lloyd Bridges. Both the DVD and the seller rate A+A+A+A+.
A Benchmark for Spoofs
2008-05-08 - No spoof does it quite like this anymore. Hot Shots is a megaload of witty jokes that is easily taken for granted by most critics. Scripting for spoofs has changed dramatically overtime. Nowadays it seems as if these spoofs are written over the weekend. Back in the 90's people put a lot more time and effort into developing a winning comedy. If you watch the special features, you will find that each actor really gave solid effort to the film. The all-star cast does not have a weak spot at all. Bridges (RIP) is on top of his game. Sheen is witty and classic in this one. Cary Elwes makes a great appearance in this film, as well as Brook's Robin Hood. (Please see some Mel Brooks films if you enjoy spoofs). Ryan Stiles needs more camera time, and Jon Cryer needed to come back for the sequel. I need to rent Top Gun one more time to appreciate Hot Shots! more, but by itself, the film really stands tall as an outrageous comedy. If you want to see more of Sheen or Lloyd Bridges, then see where the comedy began. Hot Shots! is one of the best spoof classics out there.
