  • Editorial Review:
Charlize Theron is the latest stunning blonde to be hanging around some big ape in a Hollywood movie, this one a remake of the 1949 semi-classic with echoes of the superior King Kong. Theron plays the daugher of an American researcher killed by poachers in Africa. The baby gorilla left in her care grows up to become a hugely tall and broad specimen named Joe, living in the mountains as a mostly unseen legend among people who live there. Along comes an eco-minded emissary (Bill Paxton) from a California sanctuary, who talks the jungle girl into providing safe haven for Joe at the L.A. facility. The transition is not without discomfort, but everything is aggravated via a conspiracy of poachers to get Joe into their own greedy hands. Director Ron Underwood (City Slickers) uses a combination of special-effects techniques to give Joe life and personality, and he succeeds quite effectively. The requisite giant-ape-goes-amok scenes are all in place--a couple of them pretty intense--as is a conclusion that finds the simian hero performing a stunning feat of escalation. Underwood attempts to give a little modern spin to some classic Hollywood conventions regarding wild hearts lost in civilization, and the results are pretty agreeable family fare. --Tom Keogh

Mighty Joe Young [Region 2] Reviews:
Execellent remake of a good movie 4 Star Review
2008-10-24 - A rare case of where we may have enjoyed this movie more than the original. At the very least, it's a remake worth watching compared to most Hollywood re-runs.

    GREAT MOVIE! 5 Star Review
2008-05-27 - I received this product in perfect condition even for being a used item - and in a timely manner as well. Thank you for the order.

    Remarkable Remake 4 Star Review
2008-04-13 - As a fan of the 1949 Mighty Joe Young, this Disney remake, with it's life-like Mighty Joe, was fun to watch. The storyline is updated from the original, with shades of Jane Goodall in the beginning and the special effects are great. And you can't go wrong with beautiful Charlize Theron! It is just a fun family film with a message.

A fine remake 4 Star Review
2008-03-28 - Sweet, and faithful to the 1949 original Mighty Joe Young, this is one of the better remakes I have seen.

While the original movie about a girl and her giant gorilla friend remains entertaining enough to stand on its own, this remake strives to do it justice, and succeeds. The two movies complement each other almost perfectly!

A fairly faithful, straightforward update of the original plot (which itself is something of an upbeat remake of King Kong), someone definitely did their homework in re-creating Mighty Joe. The computer effects and animatronics are believable, but the facial expressions and primate mannerisms are what make him so absolutely convincing.

    (spoilers):

While the "giant-gorilla-on-the-loose-in-the-big-city" scenes don't compare to their truly outrageous counterparts in the original MJY (real, live African lions being catapulted about the Coconut Grove!), they're entertaining enough for audiences of all ages.

The remake also felt some politically-correct need to add bad guys that weren't necessary in the original, but by introducing poachers that leave the girl and Joe orphaned, they also seem to offer an ironic apology for what alsmost certainly happened in acquiring the baby gorilla for the original movie.

    JOOOOOOE 5 Star Review
2007-08-31 - I loved this move, an still amazed how they made it seem Joe was really there. If only......................
