The is the year 2022. Overcrowding, pollution, and resource depletion have reduced society's leaders to finding food for the teeming masses. The answer is Soylent Green - an artificial nourishment whose actual ingredients are not known by the public. Thorn is the tough homicide detective who stumbles onto the secret so terrifying no one would dare believe him.
Description of Soylent Green:
Charlton Heston seemed fond of starring in apocalyptic science-fiction films in the late 1960s and early '70s. There was Planet of the Apes, of course, and The Omega Man. But there was also 1973's Soylent Green, a strange detective film (based on Harry Harrison's Make Room! Make Room!) set in 2022 and starring Heston as a Manhattan cop trying to solve a murder in the overpopulated, overheated city. His roommate (a necessity in the overcrowded metropolis), played by Edward G. Robinson, tries telling him about a better time on Earth before there were no more resources or room left; but Heston doesn't care. Directed by Richard Fleischer (The Vikings), the film has a curious but largely successful mix of mystery and bleak futuristic vision, somewhat like Blade Runner but without the extraordinary art direction. This was Robinson's last film and he's easily the best thing about it; his final scene seems terribly appropriate in retrospect. Joseph Cotten makes an appearance as the man whose murder results in the revelation of a shocking secret. --Tom Keogh

Classic Sci Fi - Stands test of time 
2009-12-24 - I saw this as a teen and enjoyed it, so I watched it again and still enjoy it - even though I was never a Chuck Heston fan. Edgar G. Robinson's last film, a small part, but played well.
Tells a tale of an overcrowded planet that can no longer produce enough of anything to maintain decent standards of living - except, of course the filthy rich. Talk about Global Warming! Chuck is a detective who is trying to solve a murder, but stumbles onto something much more sinister. Will he triumph over the forces of evil?
Good plot twist at the end. This kind of movie reminds you that the story is important, not the special effects. That's why it's still entertaining to this date. A true classic Sci Fi movie, if you haven't seen it, its worth a look and it is still meaningful even today.
Classic, worth watching! 
2009-12-15 - This is a classic sci-fi movie with two GREAT actors: Charlton Heston & the last appearance of Edward G. Robinson, plus a very sexy Leigh Taylor-Young. This movie is considered a classic, and even with their limited SFX, there's still a well communicated sense of crowding, systemic failure, and human degradation. The plot is an interesting mystery, and the relationships are complex and interesting, especially between Heston's and Robinson's characters.
This movie has some of the classic lines that have been repeated in spoofs and parodies. It's also given us a metaphor for the environmental damage that results from overcrowding, and the harmful effects it has on the humans that create it.
I'm not going to lie, the movie does have some scenes that feel dated. This was more about what the 70's thought the future would be like, then how they are or (probably) will be. From the clothing, the furniture, and attitudes about sex and women ... this definitely feels like a movie of it's time. Even so, it was fun to watch with my wife, who had never seen it, and it was interesting to see how much I remembered and how much I had inferred but was not specifically stated. For this price, and for the influence this movie has had and the performances involved ... it's definitely a good purchase.

2009-12-01 - Impressively predictive of (what was then to be) the future - apart from the primitive communications technology - of a world grossly overpopulated and baking from the effects of global warming. I fear, however, that the "shocking" ending was telegraphed very early in the movie. Otherwise a workmanlike performance from Charlton Heston, but the main delight is to see Egward G. Robinson at his quirky, idiosyncratic best.

2009-10-15 - A wonderful, really bad, movie. You will catch yourself sub-refrencing it for months after watching it. People will wonder what you are talking about.
