Description of National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation [Blu-ray]:
You know exactly what you're getting in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation: another goofball, slapstick comedy of chaos and catastrophe with Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) and family. This time, there's no traveling involved: Clark and Ellen (Beverly D'Angelo) prepare for a nice Christmas with the kids (played by none other than Juliette Lewis and Roseanne star Johnny Galecki), when their home is invaded by backwoods cousin Eddie (Randy Quaid) and his brood, along with assorted other crazy and/or stuffy relatives. Complications, of course, are inevitable. The film is preceded by National Lampoon's Vacation (1983) and National Lampoon's European Vacation (1985) and followed by National Lampoon's Vegas Vacation (1997). Directed by Jeremiah Chechik, who went on to do Benny & Joon and the Sharon Stone remake of Diabolique. --Jim Emerson
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation [Blu-ray] Reviews:
Need A Good Laugh?
2009-12-15 - I had purchased this movie many years ago when it first came out and thought it was absolutely hysterical. Now, this many years later, in speaking with my sister about some "relatives" that she was having some concerns over, I snidely commented that her story reminded me of the Chevy Chase Movie, Christmas Vacation. She either didn't remember this movie or actually had never seen it before so I immediately went to Amazon.com (which always has the best prices)and ordered one for her.
It arrived within a few days and the next phone call I received was the sound of my sister laughing hysterically as she thanked me for the great gift. They plan to share it with several neighbors so I know this DVD will really be seen by many. Good way to start laughter 'round the world.
20th anniversary dvd is a rip off!!!!!!
2009-12-15 - I bought the 20th anniversary addition thinking the dvd was getting an overhaul, plus all the cool extras, I was wrong. Its the same 2003 version just with a different picture on the disc and dvd cover and for 31$ thats not worth it. All the extra stuff is cool and so is the tin, but to reissue the same disc with no extras just isn't very cool, especially when I already own the 2003 special edition. So save your money and buy the 2003 version or upgrade to Blu Ray.
Christmas classic looks amazing in Blu-ray high definition
2009-12-14 - This movie which has become a holiday tradition in so many households looks simply amazing on Blu-ray in high definition. Detail is high and the flesh tones look solid with colors vibrant and black levels pleasing. Overall the print is in good shape with some nicks few and far between but particularly evident in long distance shots, but on the whole the Blu-ray looks good and certainly better than an upscaled DVD. The audio track is presented in a Dolby Digital 2-channel audio track and is very front heavy with the majority of the sound coming from the center channel speaker with very little from the rear. Dialogue is clean and on the whole this Blu-ray disc sounds fine.
One area that is disappointing is the supplemental package though we do get a worthwhile commentary track. I was particularly interestef to hear what actors Beverly D'Angelo, Randy Quaid, Miriam Flynn, Johnny Galecki, director Jeremiah Chechik, and producer Matty Simmons had to say in their commentary track and thankfully we get a humorous and fun track full of anectdotal recollections. The only other extra is a standard definition trailer for the movie.
But what of the movie itself? The movie is already a Christmas classic with the gags coming quick and fast. I have always thought Chevy Chase to be a hit and miss comedian but when Chase is in top form he is hilarious and thankfully Chase is firing on all cylinders in this movie harkening back to his other successes such as "Seems Like Old Times," "Foul Play,"and "Fletch." The movie follows the manic antics surrounding the efforts by Clark Griswald to put together the perfect family Christmas, an effort that does not go entirely as planned. If you've seen the other Griswald adventures you will have a good idea of what to expect as all of Clark's efforts unravel on the way to a satisfying conclusion. This movie and Blu-ray is well worth your time and money.
