Curse of the Golden Flower, a fictionalized historical glimpse into the brutally complicated politics of Emperor Ping's (Chow Yun Fat) reign during the Tang Dynasty, shows the viewer just how far a megalomaniac must go to gain and retain power in medieval China. Lavish sets, massive ceremonial displays, and perversely fascinating battle scenes impress similarly to the special effects Americans have come to love and expect from Chinese action films like Zhang Yimou's previous House of Flying Daggers and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. An intricate plot involving the Emperor's wife, Empress Phoenix (Gong Li) and their three sons, Crown Prince Xiang, Prince Jie, and Prince Cheng, most closely follows the Empress's secret plan to force abdication upon her corrupt husband as revenge for his slowly poisoning her with Black Fungus tea. Opening on the eve of the Chysanthemum Festival, 928 A.D., the Empress obsessively embroiders gold chysanthemums to adorn her army's uniforms while hatching plans with Jai to overthrow the Crown Prince for control of the throne. Meanwhile, a side plot develops as the Emperor's ex-wife and mother to Crown Prince Yu reemerges as Yu's lover. By the time the Festival occurs, family members are pitted against each other in a King Lear-ian web of lies that can only result in demise. Entertainment plus History!
2009-11-07 - My primary intent with the purchase of this movie was to play it in Mandarin Chinese with English subtitles as an aid to my self-study efforts at learning Mandarin Chinese. I find that watching these Mandarin Chinese movies are a tremendous learning help, plus of course, Great Entertainment too! And if my wife shows an interest in watching the movie, simply play it in English language!

an excellent movie
2009-10-29 - The movie did reveal the inside turmoils of the royal family. The scene is really beautiful, and each character has their own struggles and concerns.

Terrific Entertainment and Work of Art!
2009-10-10 - I loved Zhang Yimou's earlier films and still prefer them, but his big budget action films are great too. The Curse of the Golden Flower is a terrific film about a royal family out of control. The father got rid of the original mother of his kids years ago and his second wife isn't the happiest person either. The Emperor forces her to take "medicine" every two hours for no discernible aliment which contains a poison which will cause her to eventually lose her mind. The sons find out and try to join in the rebellion with their mother who is trying to throw her husband off. Everything comes together the Night of the Chrysanthemum Festival.

Zhang Yimou's worst movie ever
2009-09-12 - I like some movies of Zhang Yimou. But he was wasting so much money to make this terrible killing story to try to get Oscar. He used so much fake CGI and stupid wire-fu in this movie. Three stars are given to Chow Yun-fat and Gong Li, otherwise it will get lower score.
