Chris Isaak managed to turn his videogenic visage and brooding masculinity to his advantage in a big way, becoming a sort of MTV-era cross between James Dean and Elvis. Heady stuff, but don't hate him because he's beautiful. In fact, Isaak had been plying his trademark latter-day rockabilly sound for some years before the inclusion of "Wicked Game" in the David Lynch film Wild at Heart jolted sales of Heart Shaped World. (But the stylish Herb Ritts video certainly didn't hurt, either.) Still, the album is a moody gem, featuring the pensive title track, the smoldering "Blue Spanish Sky," and, of course, "Wicked Game." If you still doubt Isaak's good intentions, though, check out the album's rockin' finale, a fine version of Bo Diddley's "Diddley Daddy." --Daniel Durchholz

This world is only going to break your heart
2007-12-14 - I picked up the finality of all songs to coerce my shattered existence into believing that I was not alone. Something stirs upon the surface of "Wicked game." I can feel it now, as broken wings mend the indescribable feeling that there is nothing left. Is this world only going to break your heart? Yes. Upon the factors of condition which make us fall apart. She doesn't want me to contact her, but I only want to thank her for turning me into the person that I've always wanted to be. If only for a short time. I am only left to personalize my internal devotion, and hope that somewhere, she will know this enough to be true. So many lies. And if you play with fire, you're bound to get burned.
Breakthrough for the Right and Wrong Reasons
2007-08-28 - "Wicked Game" made him famous, and it's a good-to-great song, but I'll give this five stars based on "Heart Shaped World," Don't Make Me Dream...," "Kings...," "Wrong To Love You," and "Nothing's Changed." The rest is gravy. Great stuff.
