Editorial Review:
With nothing more than a punch line and a dream, these struggling young artists transformed themselves into comedy legends. Here is a rare opportunity to see some of the world's biggest African American stars performing the routines that would someday make them Kings of Comedy.
Before They Were Kings, Vol. 1 Reviews:

Rated PG DVD. Barely worth 2 stars. Save your money.
2005-04-07 - Before They Were Kings is a DVD that will initially give off the impression of something raw, risky, new, and unseen in terms of stand up footage from some of comedey's greats. Mostly in part due to the sheer brilliance and hard edged qualities of "The Original Kings of Comedy". If you are expecting to experience some new or rare material from legendary comics such as Chris Rock, Michael Winslow, Steve Harvey, D.L. Hughley, and Arsenio Hall....you will be sadly dissapointed. This DVD contains nothing more than mid 1980's and early 1990's foootage from New York's Improv and the Los Angeles Comedy Store, with bits that many fans have already heard countless times before. The material is all polished (clean) material. If you're expecting to see some risque material from these great comics you will be disapointed. For some strange reason all of the comics didn't seem to be in their true state of mind. The audiences weren't diverse enough for the comics to even get into their comfort zones. Nonetheless the DVD is poorly packaged, with a lack of special features, as well as any beneficial history surrounding the comedians. If you grew up watching Evening at the Improv or MTV's half hour comedy hour...you have already experienced this extremely light material. I will only rate this with 2 stars due to Michael Winslow's uncanny emulation of Jimi Hendrix's Star Spangled Banner at Woodstock.
This is Hilarious
2005-02-16 - Before They Were Kings is awesome. Not only is it hilarious, but it's really cool to see where guys like Chris Rock and Steve Harvey started. And when Michael Winslow gives his tribute to Woodstock, I was in utter disbelief and shock at how amazing it was. This DVD is a definite must for the collection of all comedy fans.
this is what comedy is all about
2005-02-16 - This dvd is just hilarious! I enjoyed seeing all the older material from these comedians. You'll really appreciate good comedy after you see this. Chris Rock, you're the man!!! Cracked me up the whole time. Nice to see Arsenio Hall again. Shout out goes to all the comedians on the dvd. Funny stuff!!!
