  • Editorial Review:
Theatrically released in 1991 as Highlander II: The Quickening, this sequel was later reedited and gained a small but loyal following (prompting a spinoff TV series), but at the time of its release critic Roger Ebert called it "the most hilariously incomprehensible movie ... almost awesome in its badness." In other words, you might find some guilty pleasure in this chaotic sequel to 1986's Highlander, in which Christopher Lambert reprises his role as Connor MacLeod, a member of the alien race known as "Immortals," banished to Earth from his home planet Zeist some 500 years ago. In the year 1999, Lambert owns a corporation that has created a shield to protect the Earth following the depletion of the ozone layer. But the shield is seized by an evil cartel, and Virginia Madsen plays a scientist who assists MacLeod in his mission to destroy the cartel. Sean Connery also reprises his role from Highlander as the Scottish Immortal named Ramirez (?!), but by the time he starts engaging in dashing swordplay you may wonder if he's wandered in from another movie altogether. --Jeff Shannon

Highlander 2 - Renegade Version (The Director's Cut) Reviews:
    SEAN CONNERY 4 Star Review
2009-09-12 - THE ONLY REASON I BOUGHT THIS MOVIE WAS BECAUSE SEAN CONNERY WAS IN IT AGAIN, BUT IT WAS A GOOD MOVIE TOO.

Very bad sequel 2 Star Review
2009-06-29 - I can say am not a 5-star Highlander fan, but I like it a lot. So, when I watched the first movie of the saga, I was very enthusiastic about watching the sequel. So, I got the renegade version because I knew that the "Zeist idea" was taken out of the plot. But even that, we can't say too much about this movie, only that the plot is a little bit better. Poor acting, bad script, bad optical effects (note that when Ramirez is on the airplane, in the first shot is shown that the sky is totally red, but when the camera turns inside of the airplane, you can see the sun out of the window!!!!), poor dialogues, and the idea of putting Ramirez inside the plot again was not taken in the sense of giving him an important role in the movie. In overall, I know why fans don't think as this movie as a true sequel.

Highlander 2: Renegade Version (The Director's Cut) 5 Star Review
    2009-02-16 - DVD was entertaining.
DVD arrived in a very timely fashion.
    DVD arrived in excellent condition.

renegade version or not 1 Star Review
2008-12-16 - this is one of those movies you wish you could un-watch. i think it was going for the so bad its good approch but is just soooo bad

May not be as good as the first, but an awesome DVD release turns a bad movie into a great movie! 5 Star Review
2008-11-28 - Highlander 2 came out back in 1991. I saw the original version and I was not impressed with it. The special effects were terrible and the plot was pretty jagged. Then the DVD came out. I never saw the Renegade version but I was lucky enough to catch the 2-Disc edition from Lionsgate. Needless to say, I was impressed. The special effects look so much better due to all of the digital reenhancing. The quickening effects look way better than the effects in the original. The energy shield effects look way better too to give it a much darker atmosphere. The sword fights are not as good as the original but they are good. It's also fun to see Katana hijack a train and go nuts. Katana is a good villain but he'll never beat the Kurgan (YOU WILL ALWAYS BE WEAKER THAN I!). Russell Mulcahy should be given a pat onthe back for making one of the most beloved fantasy pictures ever with a decent sequel. The other sequels are good, but not as good as 1 and 2. The special effects are at their best in 1 and 2. At least Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery have come back. This movie also has a great soundtrack with an awesome song: Lou Gramm's One Dream. If you want to own this film on DVD, get the 2-Disc Special Edition from Lionsgate. If you have the Renegade version, trash that and get the Lionsgate version. You will be impressed. The DVD makes this film way better! There can be only one!
