Editorial Review:
After a foolproof scam turns sour, Jimmy the Saint (a soulful but miscast Andy Garcia, who mainly acts with his hair) and his hard-bitten crew must put their various sordid affairs in order before facing their final bloody curtain call. It's not nearly as clever as it thinks it is, but this terminally wise-ass (and extremely violent) caper flick is still one of the better post-Tarantino crime opuses, with some sharp dialogue, a scenery-chewing Christopher Walken (as a paraplegic archcriminal), and unhinged performances by Treat Williams and the obsequious Steve Buscemi that must be seen to be (dis)believed. Neophyte scripter Scott Rosenberg would later pen hipper-than-thou scripts for Beautiful Girls, Con Air, and Armageddon, while director Gary Fleder moved on to the somewhat more reputable Kiss the Girls. The tongue-twisting title is from a Warren Zevon song. --Andrew Wright
Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead [Region 2] Reviews:
Great movie, deserves a wider following
2009-12-27 - If you like stories of small-time hoods, and enjoy being sucked into a different, but fully-realized world, then this is the movie for you. Great performances, quirky characters, fascinating dialog, all punctuated by bursts of violence, combine to create a mesmerizing experience. Often unfairly compared to "Pulp Fiction," this is much more of a fantasy than a gritty crime drama, and is more about loyalty and principles than about guns and bullets.
Truly underrated gem of a film
2009-11-19 - When you think about the great gangster films it is truly sad that this little gem doesn't come to most people's minds. Riding a great screenplay that mixes solemn topics with biting satire this film takes the viewer on a journey that bobs and weaves through a city not known for the greatest journeys. Check out this one of a kind film.
most excellent response
2009-10-12 - Purchased an old film I had been looking for, for sometime..it arrived the next day....I mean what could be better than that....!A=Excellent.
Lively, twisted and witty
2009-09-22 - Ever try to do the right thing and it turns out wrong? Multiply that by 100 fold. Being in the mob and messing up the way these fellas did is deadly. Follow the dialogue closely or you will miss many small cues.
Buck wheats cause you to imbibe boat drinks lol. Both terms mean you're not on this physical plane... I dare you to give it a name ;)
Without over-analyzing...
2008-03-02 - So it's a Tarantino knock-off. So it's too self-aware and big for its britches. For crysakes, just sit down, pop it in the DVD player and suspend your disbelief for 90 minutes or so. This movie is just plain fun to watch. It's on the very short list of movies I actually want to own.
