Editorial Review:
Jennifer Aniston (Emmy Award winner, Friends), as you’ve never seen her before, stars with Clive Owen (Golden Globe winner, Closer) in this "stylish and entertaining thriller" (Richard Roeper, Ebert & Roeper). Married man Charles Schine (Owen) meets Lucinda Harris (Aniston), a high-powered investment banker on a commuter train one morning. An innocent conversation leads to an evening drink. Before either one can stop it, their aroused passions lead to a sizzling one-night stand. Suddenly a stranger explodes into their world, threatening to expose their secret, and lures them into a terrifying game with more surprises than they saw coming. Hang on for dear life, because "Not since Fatal Attraction have the potential pitfalls of marital infidelity been so frighteningly portrayed in a movie (Arizona Republic)."
Description of Derailed (Theatrical Full Screen):
With a nasty villain and a plot twist that will take many viewers by surprise, Derailed is the kind of potboiler that's enjoyable in spite of its flaws. It's basically two-thirds of a good movie, with a convincing set-up and a barely plausible payoff that... well, you've just got to see it and decide for yourself. Like Fatal Attraction, it's a good-enough thriller that turns infidelity into every man's nightmare, beginning when Charles (Clive Owen), a well-to-do Chicago advertising director with a sickly, diabetic daughter and a slightly troubled marriage, has a chance encounter with Lucinda (Jennifer Aniston), a lovely and quick-witted financial advisor who's also stuck in a marital rut. Their chemistry is instant (between both characters and stars), but their eventual hotel tryst is interrupted by a mugger (French actor Vincent Cassel at his vile, despicable best) who's out to milk Charles for every dollar he's got. Of course, one phone call to the police would solve everyone's problems, but as he did with Collateral (albeit more convincingly), screenwriter Stuart Beattie turns up the tension with such manipulative skill that you're willing to skate past the plot holes and go along for the ride. With lively supporting performances by rappers Xzibit and RZA, Derailed marks a commercially slick American debut for Swedish director Mikael Håfström, whose 2003 thriller Evil was a Best Foreign Film Oscar®-nominee. --Jeff Shannon
Derailed (Theatrical Full Screen) Reviews:
Jennifer Aniston is a trade mark for good work....
2009-09-14 - Aside from all suspense/mystery waves of movies with a stupid good looking actress, stupid plot, and a stupid twist at the end (i.e. lame movies like "deception")... This movie is an exception; Jennifer Anniston delivers on her promise of being a star again and again. I don't want to ruin the movie for the appreciative audience, so I will simply say, very much recommended!
Don't let the critics derail you
2009-08-26 - Clive Owen did a credible job playing the stressed, hapless guy who gets caught with his pants down. Jennifer Aniston is not someone I've ever found particularly appealing (either looks or acting-wise), so Clive going for her while he had a faithful Melissa George at home didn't make a lot of sense to me. Ah, but then there was a truly menacing performance by Vincent Cassel that made me forget any such quibbles and fall hook, line and sinker for the plot. All in all, a much better movie than I was expecting.
You'll never entertain adultery after seeing this film
2009-08-04 - 2005's "Derailed" tells the story of a man (Clive Owen) who's obviously lost passion for his wife and is dealing with the stress of a daughter with serious medical problems. On the train to work he starts a relationship with a woman (Jennifer Aniston) which slowly veers toward adultery. Things go from bad to worse. Vincent Cassel is featured as the love-to-hate villain.
I mainly judge films by whether or not they pull you in and hold your attention. "Derailed" does this in spades. I was also impressed with the writing. Although another reviewer panned the writing as "unbelievable tripe" and "horribly written" the story struck me in a totally opposite manner. Okay, maybe parts of the story are unbelievable, in particular the ending's prison surprise, but how many movies today are truly believable? Some have criticized the story as predictable but I was surprised and impressed by the turns the film takes. And I never saw it coming.
I'm not going to say anymore because the less you know the better. Stay away from the reviews that (without warning) give away the entire plot!
"Derailed" is a top-of-the-line thriller/drama.
Pretty Good!!!
2009-04-25 - I watched this last night for the 1st time, and I thought it was pretty good! Charles Schine meets Lucinda Harris on a train. It begins as harmless fun, but when he has an affair and takes her to a cheap hotel, they are robbed and Lucinda is raped by a guy named Philippe LaRoche. LaRoche starts blackmailing Charles and threatens to tell his wife, but he can't let that happen. There is a lot of suspense and a little plot twist! I highly recommend DERAILED!!!
One of the greatest movies yet!
2009-01-06 - I love this movie! It's so surprising, you don't know what is going to happen. I never really liked Jennifer Aniston but in this movie, her acting really pops out!
