Description of Nanny McPhee (Widescreen Edition):
With hairy warts, a stern-looking unibrow and one extremely protruding buck-tooth, Nanny McPhee is a wonderfully comedic substitute for Mary Poppins in this entertaining family fantasy. By loosely adapting Christianna Brand's Nurse Matilda children's books of the 1960s, OscarĀ®-winning screenwriter Emma Thompson (Sense and Sensibility) has also given herself the plum role of Nanny McPhee, who can tame even the most unruly children with a tap of her magic walking stick. Her latest challenge is the bratty brood of a recent widower Mr. Brown (Colin Firth), who's under pressure to find a new wife or lose his much-needed allowance from wealthy Aunt Adelaide (a tailor-made role for Angela Lansbury). His love for scullery maid Evangeline (Kelly Macdonald) remains unspoken as he wincingly woos the eagerly merry widow Mrs. Quickly (Celia Imrie), but Brown's raucous rugrats have a plan to make things right, especially after they've come under the benevolent influence of Nanny McPhee, whose peculiar brand of discipline works wonders for everyone involved. Both quintessentially British and universally appealing, this wildly colorful comedy (thanks to a bold palette of costume and production design) was capably directed by Kirk Jones, whose appreciation for comic actors was equally apparent in his critically acclaimed 1998 comedy Waking Ned Devine. With just a hint of darkness to offset the whimsy, Nanny McPhee offers a splendid match of director, cast and material, guaranteed to please Wallace & Gromit fans and anyone else with a taste for British zaniness. --Jeff Shannon
Nanny McPhee (Widescreen Edition) Reviews:
Fun and educational
2009-10-01 - The kids love it, I love it, and the movie attempts to teach responsibility. Also has a great ending (generally lacking from movies these days). It's a great family movie.
The only con that I saw is that the nanny describes herself as a "government nanny" (referring to her employment agency). This sounds too much like big government. Very scary and just in time for Halloween.
Fabulous film and a visual delight
2009-09-19 - This movie has it all: wonderful script, endearing kid actors doing a great job, dry English wit, sight gags galore, and outstanding set design and costumes. Mrs. Quickly's knick-knack strewn parlor is one of the greatest sets I've ever seen in any movie. Too bad the camera couldn't have lingered there a little longer. Very big laughs in our house when the measles medicine was going down. All in all, a triumph for Ms. Thompson.
Great family movie
2009-09-12 - When I went to WalMart, they were no longer carrying this movie. Thank you, Amazon, for having such a good selection of products to choose from. This is a delightful movie for kids and adults.
Excellent product and service
2009-09-10 - After watching the movie, Nanny PcPhee on TV and being thoroughly delighted with it, I went to the computer and ordered the DVD from Amazon and had it shipped to my four year old great granddaughter. Her dad e-mailed to tell me that the family had just watched it and were also delighted! It is a visual feast; outrageously colorful, beyond adorable baby scenes, surprising physical changes in a few of the characters throughout the course of events....and an exquisitely beautiful finale.
Love Nanny Mcphee...
2009-08-11 - So I'm super excited a new movie is coming out called "Nanny Mcphee and The Big Bang" March 2010. : )
