Description of Pride and Prejudice - The Special Edition (A&E, 1996):
Jane Austen's classic novel of 1813, Pride and Prejudice, still wins the hearts of countless schoolgirls with its romantic story of Elizabeth Bennet and her Mr. Darcy. Now, the 1996 BBC miniseries is winning over adults, with its faithful adaptation, gorgeous scenery, and superb acting.
The essence of the story is the antagonism between Mr. Darcy, a wealthy single man who believes Elizabeth to be beneath him, and Elizabeth, who upon being insulted at a dance by the aloof Darcy refuses to associate with him in any manner. Austen evokes incredible tension with the wit and flirtation of the two characters, and director Simon Langton (who also directed Upstairs Downstairs) successfully translates the repartee and conflict in this six-hour miniseries. Dialogue, for the most part, is painstakingly replicated, except when fleshing out and smoothing for modern sensibilities was necessary. Darcy, for instance, is drawn out, giving his personality significantly more depth. The acting sweeps you away to Regency England: Jennifer Ehle (of Wilde) is convincing as the obstinate Elizabeth, who, despite her mother's attempts to marry her off, spurs the attentions of Darcy. And Colin Firth (of The English Patient) will have women everywhere longing for a Mr. Darcy of their own.
For those who have been on an Austen binge--enjoying such excellent adaptations as Sense and Sensibility and Persuasion--this miniseries will round out the ultimate Austen video library. For those new to these romantic period pieces, this version of Pride and Prejudice will have you hooked and longing for more. One caveat, however: plan to watch it in an entire day, because very few have the self-control to not watch all six hours in a single sitting. --Jenny Brown
Pride and Prejudice - The Special Edition (A&E, 1996) Reviews:
Love this movie! Better than the new one!
2009-12-17 - The movie with Kiera Knightley in it is ok, but this movie is WAAYYY better!! It's quite the time commitment, but easy enough to watch over the course of 2 or more days. Worth it!
Pride and Prejudice Blu-ray DVD
2009-12-12 - If you love a movie that really follows the book then you'll love this version. I've had the regular version of this for some, but had to have the Blu-ray version also when I got my Blu-ray player.
*The Best Pride and Prejudice!*
2009-12-12 - This is a wonderful gift for anyone who loves Pride and Prejudice.I enjoyed every moment watching it.I loved all the actors,I think they all did perfect in their roles.I must say my favorites were Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth.A true romance movie. Will enjoy many viewings of this.
Video quality still poor in Special Edition
2009-12-11 - From reading the more recent reviews, I had hoped that the video quality issues reported by other reviewers had been resolved, but I was very disappointed in the video quality of trhe Special Edition DVD. I understand that this was made for television in the days before HD, but if you are used to watching HD, this DVD seems like very poor quality. Like other reviews, I also had to change my TV settings to put color saturation to the maximum, which means that brown and navy become black, but at least you can differentiate pale faces from lace collars. I have a 34 inch wide screen television and this is the first time I have ever been grateful NOT to have a larger screen.
If these issues are resolved with Blu-Ray, maybe it is time to start saving for a Blu-Ray player.
Pride and Prejudice is awesome
2009-12-11 - I love this version of Pride and Prejudice. It is 5 hours long, so it goes into great detail compared to other movies that are half the length.
I love Colin Firth, an excellent actor who portrays Darcy quite well. Again, great price on amazon!
