Description of America's Volume Dealer:
Since America's Volume Dealer sounds a lot like alternative metal, the unfamiliar might think they're bandwagon jumpers. But COC were among the first to explore the myriad connections between metal and punk/hardcore when they opened for thrash acts in the heyday of the '80s metal underground. But since likeminded (albeit more commercial) bands like Soundgarden and Faith No More have come and gone, perhaps COC's day has finally come. In fact, America's Volume Dealer is an incredibly high-quality piece of work that exhibits range, musicianship, and confidence. If they occasionally sound a bit like Alice in Chains, remember this: Corrosion of Conformity helped create that sound. --Genevieve Williams
America's Volume Dealer Reviews:
Not Going In Circles
2009-10-27 - This CD is probably not their best work, but for me it features some of their best songs, or my fav C.O.C songs like "Over Me", "Congratulations Song", "Diablo Blvd.", and my fav on this particular Cd in "Doublewide". There are a few songs on here I don't like, but that's not unusual for any release by this band...."Gettin' It On" and "Who Got The Fire" I believe a couple, "Stare Too Long" I can tolerate sometimes, but most often I skip over it also.
It seems to be more structured and commercial on the surface, but can't say as I've heard any of these songs on the radio (at least not very often). So to me it remains an underrated classic. It may be a bit polished and not as edgy, but it's still C.O.C and they remain on the most infuential bands out there.
Possibly the best CD I have bought all year
2009-06-24 - I cannot even begin to say how much I enjoy this album. The Southern Rock influence is fantastic but the grooves in it are just incredible. Peppers voice has a winsome quality on this album like he is looking back over time and remembering Ronnie Van Zant. This is what good music sounds like I strongly urge you to go out and buy this cd! You will not regret it.
Good as New
2009-04-16 - This is one of my favorites. I ordered this CD to replace one that my EX took it when he moved out. Although it was 'Used' it was in excellent condition. Great Deal...and it arrived faster than expected. I'm happy to have it back in my collection.
Sweet earcandy
2008-09-05 - It starts with a monster guitar hook and pummels away your senses. The cover art is from a sticker on Black Sabbath's Volume 4 vinyl release, side A. Imagine that spinning at 33rpm.
What Happened?
2007-06-10 - I think that something happened to COC between Wiseblood (1996) and America's Volume Dealer (2000). I'm not sure what, though. This album isn't terrible. It's still got some good riffs, some good vocals, and generally some good music. Perhaps this just reflects my biased expectations, but to me this album seems too slow, too soft, and too disjointed. There's nothing wrong with being slow and soft, or even disjointed at times. Many people would use those three words for the instrumental interlude bits on "Deliverance," but I actually liked those. On this album, though, there's just way too much of those qualities. There's a big difference between a cool instrumental bit for a minute, and a Load-like 45 minute rock album. I think the album before this (Wiseblood) and after (In the Arms of God) were both better than this one.
