It's amazing the difference a year makes. Upon its release, August and Everything After sounded remarkably fresh, a welcome change from the crunch and screech of grunge. Blending the vocal athleticism of Van Morrison with the moody rock of The Band, the Counting Crows turned on a whole legion of fans turned off by modern rock. But what sounded fresh soon became stale as dozens of bands flocked to the radio with euthanized versions of the Counting Crows' sound. But you shouldn't hold that against the Crow boys. August and Everything After is a fantastic rock album. Though "Mr. Jones" was the moneymaker, the disc features such standout cuts as the dark lilt of "Anna Begins," the morose "Rain King," and the outstanding U2-meets-Grant Lee Buffalo anthem "Murder of One." Maybe time, and another listen, will heal the damage wrought. --Tod Nelson

Resounding applaud for this album
2009-11-22 - Sixteen years later and I still find myself singing some of these songs. There was nothing like it when it came out and I don't personally believe this band ever quite captured this level of perfection again; the emotion, the edginess, rawness, the music and lyrics. Superbly produced, everything lined up and that is a rare occurrence in the studio.
There's plenty of praise here on the reviews but I think it's worth resurrecting this CD if you have it and listening to it. If you don't have it, check it out. It's a keeper.

2009-11-02 - Alright so I can't articulate a perfectly spoken review like others but I just wanted to vote 5 stars for this album. It is very nostalgic for me and definitely brings my mind back.
Among my favorite albums of all time
2009-06-17 - Every song on this album is great. I can listen to it from start to finish in one go. I particularly like "Anna Begins". If you like this album, you might also enjoy Matchbox 20 Yourself or Someone Like You.
Sometimes entertaining early 90s pop, no more, no less 
2009-06-04 - Counting Crows were just what the music scene needed when they released their debut album AUGUST AND EVERYTHING AFTER in 1993. After a couple of years dominated by heavy electric guitars and aggressive singers, Counting Crows offered a certain gentleness and sensitivity. Their jangly pop slices with free-associative lyrics and muppety vocals by Adam Duritz brought refreshing memories of late 1960s innocence, especially Van Morrison, but they married this old-timey feel to a very contemporary exploration of the complexities of relationships and failed dreams.
A good three-quarters of the album is pretty enjoyable listening, with the rest being filler, which one can expect from a major label release of this type. Radio play at the time was especially heavy for "Round Here", "Omaha", "Mr. Jones" and "Rain King", and to anyone growing up in the early 1990s this album may have been especially poignant. Nonetheless, listening to it now, I can clearly see why each successive album by the band has been steadily less popular than the debut. The pop goodness one finds on AUGUST AND EVERYTHING AFTER is fun, but it doesn't seem to offer any room for growth, and indeed the band couldn't even make up enough quality tracks for one album.
