Description of Midian:
It would be easy to bridle at Midian's relentless bombast and obsession with all things Goth. Many would detest a purposefully pretentious mix of Carl Orff and Obituary that occasionally collapses into early '80s-style prog-metal. And then there's J.K. Potter's laughable artwork, wherein band members look like characters in Clive Barker's miserable Night Breed, the source of the album's name. But there's also a lot here to appreciate. Frontman Dani Filth is becoming ever more convincing in his attempts to offend; some turns of phrase in his blood-spattered romances even manage to recall Keats and Byron. Musically, they seldom fail to entertain and sometimes reach the operatic heights of Laibach and Lacrimosa. More reading and refinement by this lot may produce the first Goth masterpiece since the Sisters of Mercy's First and Last and Always. --Dominic Wills

2009-11-20 - Cradle of Filth are fantastic and I think that if you want to get into them, you need to listen to this album first. Specifically, Her Ghost in the Fog.

2008-07-18 - Seriously this album rapes. Not only is it a great album, but it's audiophile worthy as well. Every time I listen to a song I seem to hear something I had missed before. This album has everything! devilish vocals, crunchy guitars, sic keyboards, and punchy non-repetitive drums (not like cruelty and the beast, which was a disappointment.) If your just getting into CoF or you just seemed to have missed this album, pick it up!
If you listen to this album and say it's not black metal your out of your mind!

2008-06-15 - As said in the title, Midian is a great album, and my first introduction to Cradle of Filth other than the singles. Ive had this album for about a week when i got it off of itunes. Its actually quite catchy for an extreme metal album (some would say black metal, but i disagree with that tag) as the litte vocal harmonies by Sarah Deva add some nice melody into the music (other than the keyboards, but those get tiring after a while.)
My favorite songs off of Midian are:
"Cthulhu Dawn" - One of the shorter tracks on this album, so its fairly easy to digest. Dani Filth shows some amazing vocal prowess here, hitting some very interesting high notes. The lyrics are related to a piece of literature by Lovecraft that i never read. Ha.
Saffron's Curse - The keyboards in this song are enticing.
"Lord Abortion" - Starts out fast, with extremely fast screaming from Dani. Its amazing that he can say that many words in 6 or 7 minutes. Song slows down a little further down for a creepy monolouge, adding to the whole theatrical feel. And oh yeah. Its about necrophilia. Dead Girls Dont Say No.
"Her Ghost in the Fog" - The best song on this album, without a doubt. The shortened version on the video really fails to do this song justice. The song pours with emotion. Has a very intriguing story, but i wont ruin it for you.
"Tearing the Veil from Grace" - Longest song on the album. The choir's melody is very catchy and almost sure to get stuck in your head.
Well this is a very solid album start to finish, with a couple of duds and a few pointless interludes, but with songs like "Her Ghost in the Fog"
Cradle of Filth makes up for it. Music wise, its just solid metal, nothing mindblowing, but still pretty cool. Highlight of this album and band is Dani Filth and his lyrics.
And if anyone has a suggestion of which Cradle of Filth cd i should buy next, please leave it. Im considering Dusk and Her Embrace or Cruelty and the Beast due to all of the fans calling sellout towards Nymphetamine and Thornography.
And i apologize for any spelling errors i may have made. Im not gonna reread this to check. Too lazy.

2008-04-13 - If you are familiar with Cradle of Filth, then you know what to expect. Lost of wildly evil vocal screaming over brutal, very fast metal. This really is the stuff of nightmares. Horror fans should love this. Hey, they even reference Master of Horror Clive Barker with the title of the album. I really enjoyed this. Its great to listen to while driving because it sets a great mood. Lots of atmospheric music with strong bursts of metal.
Lush Symphonic Black Metal
2007-07-11 - I could have sworn I reviewed this album a few years ago but could not find it here on Amazon. What prompted this was that I bought a CD from Dimmu Borgir and heard many similarities. So, here I am.
When I first got this CD, I really had no idea what to expect. I was surprised at the lush arrangements and the range of Dani Davey's voice. The guitar work is excellent and the drumming is just the right amount of blast beats and compliments the songs instead of distracting from them.
In all, I tend to like the more melodic songs the best, such as Ghost In The Fog. The symphonic intro is also killer. I was lucky to see them live here in Las Vegas at the old Huntridge Theater just before it closed. They really rocked. I think I was the oldest guy there and everyone kept looking at me like I was a narc or something. But that's alright, I had a great time. The lineup that night was from this CD, as best as I could tell. Live, they nailed all the songs that they played from the CD. Even the unfamiliar songs were great. They rocked.
For great black metal with lush orchestration and some of the wildest vocals around, you can't go wrong with these guys. Highly recommended.
