This is a beautiful, heartwarming record. Schubert's part-songs, originally written for friendly gatherings at home, have never received the recognition they deserve, perhaps partly because he himself underrated them. Yet their extraordinary variety of mood, character, and texture, (often within a single song) and the inspired melodies, harmonic surprises, and magical modulations, are vintage Schubert. This selection focuses on "night" both literally and symbolically; it is imaginatively arranged to contrast strophic and through-composed songs; settings for male, female, and combined voices, sometimes imitating or echoing a solo voice; and songs with and without instrumental accompaniment. The music is by turns simple, cheerful, mysterious, somber, serenely luminous, and almost operatically dramatic. There is a gently parodistic Serenade, sung by women, and a devout biblical Psalm; the two best poems are by Goethe. The performances are wonderful, pristine in sound yet deeply expressive; the alto and tenor solos are ravishing. --Edith Eisler

2008-11-23 - Schubert's choral pieces at the highest level of interpretation and the performers have perfectly succeeded in bringing forward the soul of every songs. I particularly like the Gott ist mein Hirt but other pieces are equally enjoyable. The RIAS Kammerchor are a well-known choir for German repertoir, so no question about their capabilities.
My last Amazon purchase!
2008-07-14 - The product was fine, but this is my last purchase from Amazon. With computer security problems, I wanted to order a gift for a relative. So I didn't want to enter my credit card number again. Amazon will not allow one to order by phone; however phone representatives were available to deny that service thrice! They insisted that I explain my problem and then detailed the problem exactly as I explained it to them.
We have your card number, I was told. But I couldn't order on line without resubmitting the card number because the gift was not going to my address. Again they read the script of the great God COMPANY and responded by repeating what I already knew. So I tried to complain, but I couldn't use the only email access because it REQURES an order number, and I had not ordered to have one of those.
SCREW Amazon! The compnay is a monolithic bully! It is paying all of those bossy customer service people to be bitchy and rude. My really positive attitude about Amazon has been irrepairably damaged!
