Editorial Review:
Crystal Method's Legion of Boom lives up to its title, dropping blasts of thumping samples, catchy riffs, and dependable grooves. But as with previous records like 2001's Tweekend, a chaotic, industrial darkness lurks around the edges that has little in common with the sheen of commercial dance. Many still compare Ken Jordan and Scott Kirkland to the Chemical Brothers and their Big Beat, arena-pleaser cousins. But Boom sounds more like Nitzer Ebb in a good mood, or an angst-free Front 242. The duo has invited another batch of touchy-feely artists to contribute, like those noted softies Wes Borland and John Garcia, formerly of Limp Bizkit and Kyuss, respectively. Don't think for a second they aren't all having a blast, mixing in big, dumb hair metal with abandon. Most fun of all is the boost singer/actress Milla Jovovich gives to "I Know It's You," weaving her tweaked voice through a forest of tangled keyboards. With its bombastic techno-jams, Legion of Boom definitely makes for a tasty party record. Just keep the lights down as low as the bass end if you really want to capture the mood. --Matthew Cooke
Legion of Boom Reviews:
One of the best Crystal Method albums
2009-11-04 - Don't have much to say other than it was worth every penny, and it is a personal favorite for listening while working.
quit comparing vegas
2009-06-09 - ok so yeah everyone knows that vegas is TCM's greatest album to date but sadly everyone keeps comparing every album they put out to that stop it......
Legion of Boom is good it feels almost like vegas continued as if they were at a techno groove club, it's very mellow nothing really special just groovy. i really don't think they are looking to ever top vegas and i really think they don't care to top it either.
the one thing i do like about TCM is you have to treat every album as if you've never heard any of their other albums and you'll like each one
My Favorite TCM album
2008-12-14 - The Crystal Method has been my favorite Electronica band for more than a decade. I own all of the CDs that they have produced since Vegas and I love the sound of Legion of Boom.
This album provides more of the heavy beats that made Vegas so popular. If anything I think this album is more of a return to their tried and true style than what they did on Tweekend.
I can always easily tell which of their songs from this album are my favorite by looking at the number of times I've played the song on my ipod. Sorted in order from the most plays to the least are:
"Realizer", "Broken Glass", "Born too slow","Weapons of Mass Distortion", "Acetone", "High and Low", "Starting Over", "True Grit", "Bound too Long", "I Know it's You" and "Wide Open"
My Wish is that Ken Jordan and Scott Kirkland will continue to pump out the massively multi-layered beats like "Defective" (from the London soundtrack) "PHD" (from tweekend) and "Cherry Twist" (from Vegas) and do a little less of the vocal-heavy tunes that they've been putting out like "Wide Open" and "You know it's hard" (from Tweekend).
The Crystal Method: Legoin of Boom
2008-11-16 - I love the CD. Found the group on Pandora radio and liked what I heard. Like everything else when I went to the Amazon store. Will be buying more from Crystal Method and doing it through Amazon
