Another brilliant set of obsessive musings pried from Robert Smith's fuzzy navel. Epic elegies ("From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea") and tuneful romps ("Friday I'm In Love") are classic Cure cuts--Jeff Bateman
Wish Reviews:
A delightful Cure album
2009-12-05 - 1992's Wish is an album I always liked going back to. It was their first album of the 90s and I think the direction they took on this was great. The album has a very lush sound much like Disintegration. The guitars sound great and the very red cover of the album fits the sound of the music very well. In some ways this is one of my favorite albums and this marks a new step for the band from the mid 80s work. The album starts off strong with Open. Nice colorful guitar sound opening with the drums comming in making a nice beautiful, melodic piece. This song has good lyrics as well. High is not a song I'm real fond of. It's a little silly and a little too poppy for me. Funny thing with this album is in my opinon the singles from this album happen to be the worst songs on the album rather then some of the stand outs. Apart is a nice mellon collie song about drifting apart from a love. This song is sad but at the same time very relaxing. From The Edge Of The Deep Green Sea has become a live staple for The Cure for years. They actualy played it when I saw them on Curiosa in 04 and was the only song they played from this album. This song is a very strong song with great instrumentation and great lyrics. There's a great guitar line that Porl plays in the song where the note goes up an down. hard to explain but it makes the song perfect and in my opinion a Cure classic. Wendy Time is a cool dance pop song on the album. Not one of the best songs but not terrible. Doing The Unstuck is a great pop rocker that has a nice sing along chorus. This song from what I got out of it is about throwing your troubles away and making yourself happy. Really like that one. Then the album starts to hit a brick wall with a few weak songs. Friday I'm In Love is the album's hit and like I said with the singles this is one of the worst songs on the album. Musicaly it sounds good but the lyrics in this song are some of Robert's sappiest. Not a great cure hit. Trust is very slow and boring. A piano driven song and in my opinion the worst song on the album. A Letter To Elise is another single from the band and is the most bland of the 3 singles. Another song that I find really boring on the album and that marks the end of the road block because from there the album picks up steam again with Cut. Cut is a great energetic rock song which I would love to see make it back into Cure setlists. This is one of my very favorite songs on the album and another Cure classic. To Wish Impossible Things is an interesting mellow piece. Very sublime sounding. The album ends with the aprorpriately titled End. This is a great rock song and the music sounds somewhat dark but not moody. a lot of sounds and instrumentation in this one and it ends the album beautifuly. Wish is probably my favorite Cure album of the later era Cure from 92 onwards. While not a completly solid album it does have many gems on here to make it essential. This is an album I keep comming back too.
Why I love the Cure...
2009-04-27 - I've fallen in love with The Cure while listening to their recent live shows. Porl, Simon, Jason and Robert are amazing live. Love them forever. Going backward in time, I have made it my duty to listen to all their old recordings. WISH has to be my favorite album because it has so many of my favorite songs - From The Edge of the Deep Green Sea, the ultimate soul stirrer - Open, with its hip-rocking beat - Doing The Unstuck, the "happiest" jump up and dance song The Cure has ever done -To Wish Impossible Dreams, with the beautiful guitar work and End, covering you in gloom with "please stop loving me." 1992 was a very good year. Cheers!
Brilliant and I'm glad it wasn't the end
2008-12-23 - Wish is beautiful, sad, happy, basically like any Cure album it will take you any place you want to go and maybe places you'd rather not. This is such an honest album. Porl plays wonderful, he is such an important part of The Cure and I was thrilled he has made it back for the new album 4:13 Dream. Robert plays and sounds excellent as always. The lyrics are truly a thing of beauty. I have listened to The Cure for years but it wasn't till this decade that I really took the albums in or maybe they took me in but either way I fully appreciate the many masterpieces Robert has layed upon us. As many thought this was the end, I'm more than thankful it was not because they've given us so much and hopefully more great stuff to come.
The Cure are a Guitar Band
2008-08-17 - In 1992 I was reading Guitar Player and there was an article on the Cure. I always thought they were some weird goth band but I read the interview with an open mind and was surprised to find that not only did they favour writing with guitars but they (mostly Robert) had a huge vintage collection. Remember Porl went onto the Page/Plant tour? Well in the article it satates that at rehearsals and sound checks they would jam on Zep tunes before Robert would arrive. It was agreat interview and I was impressed with their wit and charm. I went out and bought both Wish and Mixed Up. Robert's writing, recording, and production techniques both won me over and inspired my own recording ventures. If you are a song writer or guitar player then you owe it to yourself to discover the Cure. They use a lot of small parts to paint a very large picture. Cheers.
Best Cure Album
2008-04-02 - Although many may argue that Disintergration is the best example of work by the Cure, Wish seems to convey an overall better display of what makes the Cure great.
