Harry Doyle (Lancaster) and Archie Lang (Douglas) are two old-time train robbers, who held up a train in 1956 and have been incarcerated for thirty years. After serving their time, they are released from jail and have to adjust to a new life of freedom, now as old men. Harry and Archie realize that they still have the pizzazz when, picking up their prison checks at a bank, they foil a robbery attempt. Archie, who spent his prison time pumping himself up, easily picks up a 20-year-old aerobics instructor named Skye (Darlanne Fluegel). Harry, on the other hand, has to waste away his days in a nursing home. They both have festering resentments --Archie for having to endure a humiliating job as a busboy; Harry for having to endure patronizing attitudes toward senior citizens. The two old pals finally go back to what they know best. After successfully robbing an armored car, they decide to rob the same train that they robbed thirty years ago. Tough Guys [Region 2] Reviews:
WHY ISN'T THIS MOVIE ON DVD????!!!!
2007-07-30 - I would love to have this film but not on VHS. Why was it on only a region 2 dvd a few years ago? GET THIS ON DVD NOW!!!!!!!
Legendary actors in shallow movie
2007-05-17 - It's a treat seeing Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas bring their effortless charm and charisma to the big screen once again, but unfortunately this movie is too self aware of their legendary status.
The joke here, is that they have been in prison for 30 years for robbing a train, and are now let out to be bewildered by the modern world. Alas, when this film was made, the modern world was 1980, which almost seems stranger now than the 50's that our heroes are nostalgic for. The 80's excess has rarely been more exaggerated in a movie, from annoying electronic soundtrack to the worst of 80's hairdo's and plastic clothes.
It's intermittently good fun, truth be told, as they attempt to retain their dignity in the face of various homes, jobs and situations. Alas, it is only at the end the movie gains a sense of purpose as they decide to rob the Flyer one more time - the job that got them in jail in the first place. In the meantime, their tough guy status might better be described as `invulnerable guys', as they foil a bank robbery, single handedly defeat a 12 strong street gang, survive all night sex with young infatuated aerobics instructors (was that last one inserted in the script by the actors one wonders..?) and evade aging hitmen.
Extended supporting roles from Eli Wallach, Charles Durning and a young Dana Carvey add little to the movie but padding - it's Douglas and Lancaster that make this movie worth watching. The movie itself however, rarely finds a narrative to give it the momentum it so badly needs.
Nostalgic treat on one hand to see the actors, but also a sad reminder of how shallow 80's cinema could be.
A 'Must See" For "Wannabee Movie Stars"!!!RIP Mr. Lancaster
2005-10-16 - This movie stars two of the Icons from the Golden Age Of Cinema namely Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster. These two very fine actors play a couple of ex convicts who can't adjust to life on the outside so they decide to rob one last train.Eli Wallach is also very funny and memorable in this movie as a myopic hitman who will stop at nothingto fulfill a 40 year old contract. This movie is a wonderful refreshing change from the Hollywood norm of Youth, Youth and yet MORE tiresome Youth on our screens. Sadly Mr. Lancaster passed away a few years ago but he did leave us with a marvellous Legacy of very memorable films including this one.
Not Quite As Good As Cocoon
2004-04-05 - TOUGH GUYS is a movie about two aging train robbers who are released from prison after serving long terms. They have trouble adjusting to life on the outside and decide to once again try to rob a train. Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas have the starring roles as Harry Doyle and Archie Long. The supporting cast includes Charles Durning, Alexis Smith, Dana Carvey, Eli Wallach and Darlanne Fluegel.
The plot is predictable and unimaginative. The acting, however, is strong in spite of the weak material and the film is very enjoyable in spots.
Watch it if it comes on TNT.
2004-02-17 - This movie is hilarious because it is now 2004. I watched it the other day and really enjoyed. However, I would never buy it. If it comes on TV in the next ten years, I'll be content. I will say that the scene in the ice cream store is incredibly funny. That kid has some great lines.
