Editorial Review:
When his beloved grandfather passes away, fifth-grade Catholic schoolboy Joshua (Joseph Cross) has a crisis of faith. He asks both the nuns and his parents (Denis Leary and Dana Delany) difficult questions as he sets out on a mission: to find God and make sure his grandfather is OK. As if that weren't enough, he also has to contend with schoolyard bullies, the sudden appeal of girls, needy schoolmates, and the recklessness of his best friend David (Timothy Reifsnyder). Though the precociousness of the children is a little hard to believe, there's a genuine feeling and a surprising complexity of thought about faith that makes Wide Awake unexpectedly affecting. Despite the largeness of the theme, the movie is made up of small images and gentle humor, which keep it grounded in reality and consistently engaging. The strong supporting cast includes Julia Stiles (10 Things I Hate About You), Camryn Mannheim (Happiness, TV's The Practice), and Rosie O'Donnell (A League of Their Own, The Flintstones, Harriet the Spy), as a nun who explains the Bible with sports metaphors. A pleasantly subtle comedy from M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense). --Bret Fetzer
Wide Awake [Region 2] Reviews:
Wide Awake is a pleasure
2009-11-13 - I love Wide Awake. It doesn't get bogged down in sentimentality. The characters are clear and believable. The quest this boy goes on to find G'd feels genuine and isn't answered with pre-set adult answers. Delightful.
I Am Wide Awake Now!
2009-08-23 - Wide Awake is a real gem. It is delightful family film, thought provoking regarding the death of grandpa, and explores the real meaning of family and friends. Every time I have viewed this, which is multiple times, I have come away with a different aspect of life. I especially love the way the kids protray their characters and the suttle comedy. As Joshua said, "I Am Wide Awake Now", reflecting on the past year, as he has decided on what is the important things in life. I can say with him "I Am Wide Awake Now, too!". It is a very clean film worth viewing with your kids. Except they have the cuss word sh-- twice in the film which could have been easily omitted.
Easily one of my favorite movies of all time, reminds me of being 12 years old in 1998... god old days..
2009-05-07 - I use to watch this movie alll the freakin time when i was like 12 years old. I like this movie a lot dude! I like movies like this & american beauty, how they are so weird. I recently ordered movies that will "take me back" I want to kinda get the vibe of being 12 again (my favorite age of all time hands down) I'm 22 now. I ordered "leave it to beaver" the movie 1998. Which i also watched like every day, & I ordered "Josh & Sam" 1994 Some movie my brother & I watched in theatres when we were like 8, takes me back. & also, I didn't order this but I use to watch every day "Casper 2 a spiritual beginning" something like that. It was some casper movie that went straight to VHS tape. Something all these movies have in common, I was the same age as the main characters in each one, when the movie came out & I like looked up to the main characters or something. Like I looked almost exactly like the kid from casper 2, seriously! at that time, i use to trip out bro- i'd be like- Dang.... We look the same dude, but why? And leave it to beaver was just funny, i think Beaver was just funny dude. & I like how cookie cutter perfect the neighbor hood was, & Wide awake was just tight dude, it's that weird kind of movie, i felt i had a lot in common with the main character. The main character has this like above average inteligents but he's not aware of it, they don't make it obvious, it's just there. & he's charismatic etc.. also, he's extremely dedicated to this One thing, which i was like that.. anyway, gotta go bro its freakin 2:14AM & I"m typing up an essay for a review dude? I'm 22 years old man, whats wrong with me hahahaha! Dang....
Undderrated and rare gem of a movie
2008-12-03 - As anyone can see from the reviews this movie is generally treasured by those who have seen it. I saw this movie about 3 years or so ago on some movie channel and was so taken with it. This is touching to anyone who has searched for a deeper meaning in life, and some form of God or spiritual being. It's also very meaningful o anyone who has ever had a very powerful relationship with a caretaker (esp grandparent) who passed away when they were young. However, most children would not understand the full meaning of this movie.
Simply one of the best movies ever made.
2007-02-11 - Simply put, this is one of the best movies I've ever seen. There are a few slow parts in the movie which could have easily been eliminated, but the content was overwhelming and the story compelling.
It's a story of a boy's awakening to his spirtual side and his quest to find meaning in a confusing world. He faces mockery from some and kindness from unexpected sources and, in the end, finds himself 'wide awake' for the first time.
So is this a story of a spiritual seeking or simply a metaphor for the journey we all take as we come of age? The beauty of this movie is you don't need to choose. You get two stories for the price of one.
Not only did I find myself thinking about this movie several days later, this is also one of the few movies which actually made me cry out loud and I'm impressed by any movie which can move me to this extent.
