Editorial Review:
Danny DeVito's adaptation of the Roald Dahl book for children is mostly just fine, helped along quite a bit by the charming performance of Mara Wilson (Mrs. Doubtfire) as young Matilda, a brilliant girl neglected by her stupid, self-involved parents (DeVito and Rhea Perlman). Ignored at home, Matilda escapes into a world of reading, exercising her mind so much she develops telekinetic powers. Good thing, too: sent off to a school headed by a cruel principal, Matilda needs all the help she can get. DeVito takes a highly stylized approach that is sometimes reminiscent of Barry Sonnenfeld (director of Get Shorty, a DeVito production), and his judgment is not the best in some matters, such as letting the comic-scary sequences involving the principal go on too long. But much of the film is delightful and funny. --Tom Keogh
Matilda [Region 2] Reviews:
One of the Best Kid Movies...
2009-12-02 - ...without all the uber sappy sweetness.
the message is inspiring - cast is perfect.
a kid movie even an adult can guffaw at.
my favorite dvd to give as gift to parents.
a classic!
Go across the pond for the widescreen format
2009-11-25 - I absolutely loved this movie, but was irked by the fullscreen format. Who would expect a "Special Edition" to have a modified aspect ratio? Just on a hunch, I checked out Amazon.co.uk, and the Special Edition there is presented in widescreen format, as the picture was intended to be seen. If you have a multi-region dvd player and would like to see the widescreen version, buy the PAL disc from the U.K. Be warned that it is region 2 and will not play on American dvd players unless they are multi-region.
Pricing
2009-10-02 - When I looked for this movie for my granddaughter (which she loves) for her birthday, I couldn't find it in Cleveland, so I purchased it from Amazon. Now I find it EVERYWHERE for less than Amazon ($5.00 - and no shipping charge). I am disappointed in that. Next time I won't be so prompt to jump on your site.
Matilda
2009-09-29 - This is an older movie, that I thought my 8 year old would enjoy. Well did she ever! Great purchase.
A fantastic book and a great film
2009-09-18 - I like to get my daughter to read books, before she sees the film - where possible. Matilda is a book that had us both engrossed for a couple of days. We read (I read mostly) whilst she ate, swam in the pool and almost slept for as long as it took. It is a wonderful story for 7 year olds and grown ups alike. We both agreed that the book was better, more detail, more suspense and more laughs, but the film was great icing on the cake. Enough to scare the living daylights out of us all (Trunchbull) and make us all relish the power of the individual. Now a slightly dated film, but the power of Roald Dahl is timeless. We are a couple of real fans!
