  • Editorial Review:
Although at first glance it looks like a movie dreamed up by a marketing committee (and in some respects it probably was), Space Jam actually defies the odds against it to become a dazzling display of family entertainment. There's a kind of demented genius to the idea of casting NBA superstar Michael Jordan in a live-action and animated movie costarring the beloved characters from Warner Bros.' Looney Tunes cartoons. They play off each other like seasoned veterans of vaudeville, and Jordan never falls into the kind of awkward, amateurish showmanship that you might expect from a sports idol. He's comfortable in the cartoon land of his costars, who include Bugs Bunny and sexy newcomer Lola Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Elmer Fudd, Sylvester & Tweety, Speedy Gonzalez, the Tazmanian Devil, Foghorn Leghorn, and Yosemite Sam. They've all been hijacked to an outer-space amusement park run by the Nerdlucks, who strike a Faustian bargain with the Looney heroes: if Bugs and Co. can defeat the Nerdluck "Monstars" in a basketball game, they'll win back their freedom; if they lose, they'll be doomed to stay there forever as enslaved entertainers. So they kidnap Jordan as their coach and "secret weapon" while the nefarious Nerdlucks suck out the basketball skills from such stellar victims as Charles Barkley and Patrick Ewing. It all leads to reckless abandon on the basketball court, and Bill Murray pops in for some hilarious support. Combining traditional animation and computer-generated Nerdlucks with its live-action cast, Space Jam was made in the anarchic spirit of the Looney Tunes cartoons, where anything goes as long as it's funny and off-the-wall (or the ceiling, or the door, or the floor...). Technically astounding, it's also witty enough to entertain adults and kids alike. --Jeff Shannon

    Space Jam [Region 2] Reviews:
Waste of Space 2 Star Review
2009-12-04 - "Space Jam" is essentially a commercial. Back in the '90s, Warner Brothers succeeded in morganatically marrying the Looney Tunes cartoons with basketball superstar Michael Jordan in their ads. But for some perverse reason they decided to turn their commercials INTO A MOVIE. It's true that music videos have become ads, with Lady GaGa,Britney Spears, and Katy Perry hawking iPhones, perfume, and alcohol--but they're brief. "Space Jam" asks for a couple of hours of your life. And what a waste indeed.

The basic plot of "Space Jam" is that the Nerdlucks want to take over the Earth, reducing its population (and the Looney Tunes) to slaves for their giant amusement park. So,the Looney Tunes challenge the Nerdlucks to a basketball game. And no,this movie is not fun like Lagaan - Once Upon a Time in India in which a cricket game is used to peacefully battle the British Empire. The Nerdlucks drain basketball greats of their powers--except for Michael Jordan for some reason. And *SPOILER ALERT* Bill Murray helps save the game. Who are you gonna call? Definitely, Murray's brief appearance IS lost in translation. There's also the introduction of the bosomy Lola Bunny,a rabbit whose sole existence is to be a sex symbol. In a kids' movie.

"Space Jam" gets itself into the jam of being unfunny, illogic, and plain not entertaining. On one's DVD shelf, a two-disc set would DEFINITELY be a waste of precious space.

Never received item 1 Star Review
2009-10-16 - My kids have been waiting for this movie to arrive for this movie since Sept. 15 today is Oct. 15 we still have not received it. I called the vendor AOKMOVIES2 to find out what could be done. The customer service rep (3)that I spoke to was not very friendly or appoligetic for the movie not arriving. The customer service rep instantly processed my payment return. I had to call back to speak to a manager who was very customer service oriented. He offered to resend the movie Oct. 12 but it still has not arrived. I ordered Monsters Vs. Aliens from another vendor Oct 8 and it was in my mail box Oct 14. I am still waiting for Space Jam that was remailed by manger at AOKMOVIES2.

Basketball, according to the Looney Tunes 4 Star Review
2009-10-12 - Who would have thought that Looney Tunes and Basketball would be a pretty good mix? Bugs and Daffy and friends are about to be taken as slaves for Mister Swackhammer, the proprietor for Moron Mountain. They must defeat Swackhammer's tiny minions with a game of basketball. This would be easier than expected (seeing that it was Bugs and his friends' idea in the first place), but the minions have stolen the talents of Basketball all-stars (including Patrick Ewing and Charles Barkley) and have become the "Monstars"! They are now stronger and bigger than they were before. So now, the Looney Tunes have only one hope: Michael Jordan. And what you get is 88 minutes of good ol' hilarity, with slapstick humor that's almost equal to the original animated Looney shorts.

This is a very entertaining movie. It has Bugs, Sylvester, and Daffy playing basketball with M.J., which is a pretty memorable concept. The reason why I've given this film four stars instead of five is because of Lola Bunny. She was a very unnecessary addition to the Looney Tunes. She's not funny, she's irritating, and she tries too hard to look attractive. Another reason is Michael Jordan's acting. It's very wooden at times, but he's not as bad as Shaq (I think you know which movie I'm talking about). But everything else is just fine. Wayne Knight and Bill Murray are pretty funny in their supporting roles. But the real stars here are, of course, the Looney Tunes. I'm pretty sure that fans of Bugs, Yosemite Sam, Tweety, and Marvin the Martian will get a kick out of this movie. It's fun for both families and Looney Tunes fans.
