Editorial Review:
THE LIFE AND TRIALS OF A YOUNG AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMAN
Description of The Color Purple (Two-Disc Special Edition):
Steven Spielberg, proving he's one of the few modern filmmakers who has the visual fluency to be capable of making a great silent film, took a melodramatic, D.W. Griffith-inspired approach to filming Alice Walker's novel. His tactics made the film controversial, but also a popular hit. You can argue with the appropriateness of Spielberg's decision, but his astonishing facility with images is undeniable--from the exhilarating and eye-popping opening shots of children playing in paradisiacal purple fields to the way he conveys the brutality of a rape by showing hanging leather belts banging against the head of the shaking bed. In a way it's a shame that Whoopi Goldberg, a stage monologist who made her screen debut in this movie, went on to become so famous, because it was, in part, her unfamiliarity that made her understated performance as Celie so effective. (This may be the first and last time that the adjective understated can be applied to Goldberg.) Nominated for 11 Academy Awards, including best picture and actress (supporting players Oprah Winfrey and Margaret Avery were also nominated), it was quite a scandal--and a crushing blow to Spielberg--when it won none. --Jim Emerson
The Color Purple (Two-Disc Special Edition) Reviews:
Put Race Relations aside!
2009-10-13 - This Movie has a powerful view and impact on certain issues that arose in the time it was set. But it is a based on a work of fiction. Therefore I am pretty sure it has a message to send across just like many if not all movies...besides "Die Hard."
So even if you hate "chick flicks" and have some issue with certain views.
I think the awards can speak from themselves.
Lead Actress: Whoopi Goldberg [...]

You don't get nominated for 11 Oscars everyday.
Beginnings of a rainbow
2009-10-01 - The movie was a gift and my friend was delighted. Movie arrived quicker than expected and in perfect condition.
OUTSTANDING !
2009-09-08 - One of the best movies I have ever seen. I think more awards should have been given to the cast of this movie than were given at the time. Every scene throughout this story is amazing !!! One to see for sure !...................................thenk you.
What is always sad...
2009-08-30 - ... is to see a great promise, and then pure crap. Whoopi Goldberg' performance was so good (very close to perfection), she should have understood that if discrimination can be very bad in many domains, it can be VERY good in some others : for example in the choosing of parts. I think Spielberg should have given her some advice on this subject after her well-deserved success (if he did, it sure didn't show). I'm almost sure that, if she had earlier done half of the crap she made afterwards (trailers only were insufferable), she would never have got this part (which would have been a pity). Unless, of course, after seeing only great performances by all, that Spielberg was so talented he could get her do what she did then, and could not do any more afterwards, which might be the right explanation. Spielberg should have a special "Oscar" for succeeding in getting such a poor 'actress' giving such an outstanding performance.
Movie is on just ONE disc
2009-07-13 - Wonderful film, and finally the entire movie is on ONE DVD. The second disc is all extras and interesting specials, but the entire movie is on disc one, and you do NOT have to flip!
